since i have my engine out i was thinking of painting it. u think the block and head should be the same color or different. i was thinking or red or green block/head, non-gloss black fo rthe valve cover, and red lettering on it, black intake with red lettering, and if possible maybe paint the tranny a color. anyone have any ideas to help me with?

Windows used to have a color scheme called Hot Dog Stand.

This is making me think of it.

Blocks are black to hide dirt and leaks, aluminum is bare because it won't rust.

Your motor is up to you.

I'd keep it black for exactly that reason^^^ it gets dirty. You can keep it clean for awhile, but then the paint just starts to tarnish. With black, you can't tell and it looks clean for a long time. I painted my block jet black with ceramic paint, and I left the new head a clean unpainted aluminum. It looks great together...so clean!

As for the valve cover, I painted mine gloss black with polished letters and it all looks great. I'd say you could go with pretty much any color for the valve cover, but the engine components that get dirty should remain black. Someone on here was thinking about painting their block white...

myself, i prefer the looks of a nice black and red engine bay. its dark so it looks cool and kinda stock, but there is a little bit of red to remind you that you did some work and its pretty.

it also helps to have some green or maybe a red hanging off your exhaust manifold ;)

well i have the 500 degree paint right now, can i use that on the heat shield? ive never painted anything on an exhaust before, do i even paint the heat shield, or just go for the manifold?

the red or the green comment i made was a joke about the fp green or fp red turbo. if you are going to paint something then paint the heat shield. i used 1600 degree paint on mine and it cracked all off. make sure you read the directions before you do it, some paint like the kind i used wants you to cure it in the oven. that is not something you want to do unless you got an extra oven... it doesnt stop smoking!

i would have never painted that stuff green, but anyway, i dont wanna paint the heatshield. could i buy a new heatshield from some vender? id preferably want a black or red one

i think www.machv.com has them in the factory 1g black or the factory 2g silver.

holy freakin crap, machv has them for $75, im not spending that much on a stupid heat shield. ok, i guess i wanna paint it again :p any tips? how much does powder coating cost?

 They're like $20 at the Mitsu. dealer.

my nearest mitsu dealer is 45 minutes away and are a bunch of assholes, i tried getting an idler pully for my mighty max and they kept on telling me that mighty max's dont even have idler pullys! wtf is up with that, so they refused to get me one, id never do business with them again

i betcha they are a lot more than that. in fact, im taking my car over there to get inspected in like 2 minutes, ill ask them for a price on one while im there.

every place i look at, they list heat shields for my car as upper and lower. why? the heat shield i have on it is stock and it is one full piece

Are you looking at turbo or N/T heat shields. On a turbo DSM, there are 2 heat shields, 1 for the exhaust manifold and 1 for the turbine/O2 housing. Not sure what it is on a N/T.

Sorry... I meant $38.14
Still a far cry from $75.
Shiny new $38.14 heat shields

just got back from SATAN (effing bastards) and they quoted me $50 on the heat shield. me and the guy laughed when he told me the price. almost every mechanic in there has a really fast dsm :thumb: but the people who do the pricing and stuff always screw me over.

Heh yea... that's why the Stealership is the last resort for parts. :thumbdown

its funny, if i go in there for performance parts (cone filters, rubber couplers, etc) then they usually get me a way better price than i can get on the internet, but if i go in there for like a lug nut its gonna be $100 + tax. damn.

well on my car (n/a) it is one big heatshield from the top of the manifold to the o2 housing, but on all these sites that sell them, for the non turbo they sell an upper and lower heat shiled, thats why i was so confused. it looks as if i am forced to paint it or polish it since i am NOT paying that much for a small piece of specially bent metal. any tips on how to paint it and what temp paint i need so it wont smoke or crack. will the 1200 degree paint work?

1200 degree paint will work, just make sure that the stuff you get doesnt need to "cure" in an oven or something like that. the stuff i got needed to cure at 400 degrees for a few hours... i didnt read, i painted, and i threw the bastard on there. it smoked all the way home and over the next week it started to flake off. my friend got something different and it didnt need to cure and it worked really well and didnt flake.

I wouldnt do black. Hard to detect leaks. I would just keep it silver looking. Paint the block and head the same color.

k, here is the scheme im gonna do... red block, red head, black valve cover with red lettering, black intake with red letering, brushed heat shield, red timing belt cover, and all bolt on accessories on the block will be black
