Hey fellas, I just purchased a little thump for the car, A 10" JL W7 and a JL 500/1 Monoblock Amp. I went and had a few quotes done on install for a custom enclosure, I got 800-1000 bucks OMG. Anywho I think i can takle this myself (im willing to try anyways) I want to sink the sub into my spare tire well and recess the amp into the enclosure too (into the top so no wires are showing). I was considering building a wooden frame and fiberglassing it but im also looking for any advice on other options i can play with. All i really wanted was a wooden enclosure wraped with black carpet. I was going to use fiberglass to seal the bottom of the enclosure. Im kinda lost and need some guidence. Also where can you purchase fiberglass kits?

you need to make sure that the size of the box (enclosure) that you make meets the needs of the sub, you could damage the sub if you have a box that is not the right size...

I am not the guru of this subject, but i was thinking what you could do is find out what size box would work best with that sub, buy it, and then you could uncarpet the box, place it whereever you planned on putting it and then build around it with particle board, to make it flush with the rest of your trunk, then carpet the whole thing, this way you know that the sub is in the right size box... i don't know if you know what i mean, but hopefully this give you somekind of idea, it would be easier to show you than to explain... hope this helps... if not i have a guy that would be the guru your looking for, but we are here in the Chi, but i'm sure he could build something for less than that, ... let me know...

you could buy the supplies needed to fiberglass at Wal-mart and Auto Zone

Me personally would just have it custom done by my shop that takes care of my audio. Mainly cause I don't know how to build anything when it comes to enclosures. Gotta say you purchased some nice gear though. I'm sure it'll thump nicely.

Id rather spend 800 bucks on my engine, (like there is anythign more to do than upgrade everything again. )

you need to go to JLAUDIO.COM then click on subwofers then go to search by size and model. once you get to the page look at the bottem and click on data sheet for this model.
this will give you the specs on how to set all your adjustments for the 500/1 amp and also the size of box (cubic feet) you will need to build.theres two differnt types of boxes you can build seald or proted.seald is for all music tight clean bass (rock,rap,crountry,etc...)
proted is mostly for base (rap) long slower deeper base.in my talon 94 i have them facing up at the glass ( two 1500 watts eclipse tens in a custom SEALED box that i built) they f**king hit. my subs only need 0.7 cub ft per sub. your sub is around 1.0 -1.7 i think if its a 2004-2005 w-7 older then that nedds a bit more room.
fiberglassing is a slower process but i made mine out of 3/4" MDF witch is just as good but i dont have a spear tire well my tire sat on top i just cut two peaces of MDF made a flat bottem and roughly placed the subs and amps and went from there.to make a box out of wood and carpet for your car shouldent coast more then $100 bucks but fiberglass more around $200-500 bucks. good luck :thumb: :talon:

The size of the box isn't as important to the subs functionality as the type of box. There are subs made for 4 setups: free air, sealed, ported, and bandpass. I'm guessing the JL is best when setup in a box of around 1 cu. ft. and a sealed box, but you would have to check that out for sure. I wouldn't bother buying a box and messing with it; it will cost you a lot more money and you will end up doing just as much work.

You should be able to buy fiberglass supplies at a lot of places. Auto stores, menards, fleetfarm, maybe walmart. Buying a kit with everything in it isn't worth it because you will probably end up using more fiberglass than it has. Just buy the epoxy resin and either matte or cloth fiberglass.

You will want to start by making the top of the box, get everything mounted in it, to make sure you have enough depth and figure out where wires will go. After that, cover your trunk, and lay out the bottom in fiberglass, then attack that to your top and carpet over it. All set
