I have just bought two new 6x9's for 1991 talon, and cannot figure out how to take the old ones out and put the new ones in. thanks for any help
luke

to take out the old speakers you must remove the big plastic thing that covers them... there is all kinds of those locking plastic tabs. to remove those... take a pencil or something... then push on the center of the locking piece.. then it will pop.. then pull the whole thing out. take out like all of the 8-10 of those... then there is some bolts that you will have to take out... one is on the floor... and i believe that one is behind the seat. then when you have that removed, you have to remove the old speaker, then wire it up. and then put all the stuff back in like it came off. be careful with those tabs, they break easily.

yea i thought that they looked like they would break easily, and when i bought the car, it was missin a couple of them, and i was wondering if they sold replacements of the little things, jw, thanks for the help tho

If you break the plastic push pins the part number is MB692976. Took me more than 6 months to track down. San Rafael Mitsu, one of the site sponsors, helped me find the part number.

They come in bags of 2. 74 cents a bag.

To change the speaker you have to completly remove your trim panel, then you will have full access to your speaker, just unscrew it and put the old speaker in and resplice the wires

alrite thanks guys, two more things, 1. is there a website where i buy the little plugs at? and 2. i have removed the side panel and i am now trying to figure out how to get to the actual speaker. any help on this would be appreciated

you can get the little t-plug in things at crutchfield.com, yo
u can pay for them by them-selves, or if you buy speakers, you get them for free

to get tghe actuall speaker out is easy, just remove the 4 screws on each corner and your speaker will come apart from that steel enclouser that it is attatched to, then you just cut the wires and there off.

heres another question i have, can anyone tell me the size of the speakers, front and back, in a 1g tsi?

stock rears are 6 1/2", 6x9's fit fine and I would reccomend them over 6.5"
dash speakers are 4", and your only choice is 4", the dash speakers can be alittle tricky to tighten down.

and if you have door speakers they are 5 1/4 and can be replaced with 6 1/2"s

Rear speakers aren't all 6x9 in the rear. Some came from the factory with 6 1/2". Shallow depth replacements fit best. Standard depth usually require some modification... like denting the chassis for additional clearance (not something I would do). Infinity has a shallow depth 6" 1/2 coax... you can get 6x9 adapter plates to mount those if you have 6x9 stock.

The stock fronts [edit] the ones in the dash[edit] aren't full 4". They're some odd size but 4" replacements will fit.

Can't recall stock door size but 5 1/4 and 6 1/2 will both fit.

There are plenty of information on the topic. Do a search.

Crutchfield site will also tell you what the stock sizes are and what fits.

alrite iv got another question though, theres a big black piece of metal that was holding the old speaker up, and i shoved my 6x9 in there and only a little bit in the center showed. Should i take the big black metal piece out, or what should i do from here?

you need that metal peice in to hold your speaker in the propper position, jsut remove your old speaker from the metal peice, and slide your new one in and screw it on, you might hand to cut or mod the metal peice, in not sure, depends on your speakers.

my infinity and mbquart 6x9s, both fit right upto the mounting hole, I imagine yours should also

It almost sounds like his car didn't start out with 6x9s but 6.5s.

i shoved my 6x9 in there and only a little bit in the center showed

I wonder why so many people buy before asking question first...

i asked questions and u all gave me wrong answers , but now im gona make the 6x9s fit by cuttin the metal

Re-read my posts. Since when did I give you the wrong information??

All you had to do was do a simple "1g* stock speaker" search and you would've found the right information on your own before buying. I did, lots of other people have as well. Why couldn't you?

Instead, you expected others to do the legwork for you by relying on the assumption that all you had to do was ask and expect people to spoon feed you the info.

The information is readily available to anyone willing to look it up. You've got no one else to blame but yourself. You would've been better off using the time to search for answers instead of being lazy and then throw a tantrum about it. All you said was that you have 6x9s and you wanted to know how to install them. Everyone assumed your car is one of those made for 6x9s.

Heck, all you had to do was to pull the rear panels off partially to see if the stock speakers are 6.5 or 6x9 before you bought anything. Man up and take responsibility for your own mistake. Everyone who has responded has done nothing but help you... and you throw a fit for the help? Good luck getting more help.

Do you mean the mounting depth or the actual size of the speaker ( 6 1/2 vs 6*9) I bought alpine type r's in the rear and the mounting depth was a lot more than stock , I had to remove those black metal things and cut out the stock grill then I placed 4 bolts instead of screws and I tightened a nut in the back of the speakers ( the speaker was atached to the trim panels .)
