Hey all,

New to the forum and just had a lil something to say.....
Since Hahn makes no stage kit for the 1G, i decided i was going to do my own turbo bolt on. In the end it was relatively cheap and im extremely happy with the performance....so i just thought id lay out what exactly i did to my NT as sort of a guide for all of you 1G NTers who might want to bolt a turbo on.....

First off i went to the junk yard....many valuble things there if you know what to look for....anyways i picked up a TSi Exhaust mani, downpipe, and the rest of the exhaust from the downpipe back....total cost at junkyard...150 bucks...i also bought a 1G o2 housing at the yard.....ok i stole the o2 housing at the yard. i could have taken off with everything becuase i had a buddys truck with a camper and the guy just let us go back and grab what we wanted then come up and pay for it...but i payed for all the other stuff...oh and i almost forgot, i went back about a week lata and bought the SMIC with both the upper and lower pipes and a TSi fuel pump for about 230 i think it was.

Next it was off to Ebay to search for a 14b....bought a used one for 120 bucks and it is in great shape..and it was a great deal...i also picked up some 450cc injectors.

So now ive got the turbo, the injectors, the full exhaust, the 02 housing, and the fuel pump....some of these things you dont even need to complete the bolt on setup, but i wasnt going to do my bolt on without them.....all of this cost me around 500 bucks.

I took it all to a local shop to have it installed because i wasnt confident enough to do it myself...:(....all and all the shop charged me 650 bucks for labor to put everything in.

So now for right around 1200 hundred dollars i have a turboed NT.....i run 8 Psi daily but i wont ever take it any higher....plugs show absolutely no signs of detonation and i cant audibly hear any knock while driving the car....i always use premium though and octane booster every other tank.

With my high 9-1 compression ratio....8 psi should be putting me at right around 190-200hp or about a 50 percent increase and thats damn fine by me....damn fun to drive too :thumb:

anyways just letting people know it doesnt take a whole lot to do the BOLT ON turbo (not the swap) mod and you get right around the same amount of power as a stock TSi because of the higher compression ratio...(a TSi without the turbo wouldnt have anywhere near 135 hp like the stock NT does because of the much lower compression ratio, power without the turbo would be much closer to 100hp which is why it takes less psi on the higher compression NT to equal that of a true TSi)

how did the computer handle larger injectors? dont you thin you will be running pig rich? most people also put in the turbo ecu...it only needs a few more wires..... does your clutch slip at all? our clutches werent really designed to take that much torque. how many hours did it take the mechanic? are you happy with it? i still want to turbo my car....but i think i would find a whole wrecked tsi and swap parts then sell the block....and steal the tsi cams.

Not to mention they better have installed an injector resistor pack or you will burn those injectors out in no time.

Yea i forgot to mention the IRP, the mechanic did install one as he told me without it i would, just as you said, burn out the injectors in no time...I have an AFC controlling the injectors....i didnt think the AFC even hooked up to the NT ECU but again the mechanic did all of the install and he made it work so im happy. My clutch is fine as of now but its practically brand new and i know its not gonna last so im saving for an ACT 2100. Ill have to find my bill from the shop, Engine House if anyone here is from the Phoenix area, and look up the hours put into it. Im completely and totally happy with the finished product.....I was never looking for 300 and 400 hp though, just maxing out my NT with the bolt on and im right about there. As i said the higher compression has me close to 200 hp and i kill my buddys stock 93 TSi FWD on a daily basis. Hope that answers your questions......just waiting to get my pictures loaded!

anyone know if the TSi oil pan will bolt onto the NT? i had to tap my oil pan for the return line and its leaking so im just wondering cuz ill take a drive down to the junkyard tomorrow if it fits.

i don't know about the oil pan.... but do you thin kthe act 2100 will be enough? since the flywheel and clutch on an nt is smaller than on the turbo, it doesnt hold as well as a turbo 2100.....at least thats what i've heard.....
my car has a turbo tranny it. when my tranny went it was the only one i could find. i needed the turbo clutch and turbo flywheel though....but if i do decide to turbo(which hopefully i will) i won't need to upgrade my clutch as fast.
won't you spool up faster than a turbo as well because the higher compression makes more exhaust gas and therefore more energy for the turbo to spin sooner? and before the turbo hits you will have a lot more oomph to start with.....

Just make sure that if you have a 6-bolt block, that the turbo oil pan is off of a 6 bolt block. If you have a 7-bolt block, make sure the turbo oil pan is from another 7 bolt block.

well the NT 2100 is good through 241 ft lbs of torque, and im not near that yet, prolly much closer to 190 so thats not a problem....as for the higher compression making the turbo spool faster i dont know about that one, i know the higher compression makes better use of less psi but im not sure....ive driven a tru TSi FWD before and take off seems about the same...but i like the overall driving experience more in mine...and i found out that the oil pan will fit, i lucked out and got a 6 bolt, i hear that as of the end of febuary 1992 they started manufacturing both NT and Ts with the 7 bolt set up....my car was built on feb 2 1992 and i checked it out underneath and im all 6 bolt so :thumb:

awesome job, sounds like everything was done right and it all wroked out good. but i'm going to ask a couple of questions that i'm sure others will ask.

1. did you use the turbo throttle body or custom uicp??

2. are you watercooling the turbo at all?

3. do you have the oil cooler installed?

4. are you datalogging this car at all?

the setup you have sounds like a real good drop in setup. personally i think the act2100 is a great combination for you car. you'll probably have engine related problems before running into more torque than it can handle. don't mess with the octane booster stuff as it isn't that great of a product (except for stealing your money, it's great at that) and the one time you don't put it in would be the time you blew something serious anyways. if i were you i'd look into a full turbo back exhaust consisting of at least 2.5" mandrel piping. remember that now that you have a turbo any 1g fwd turbo exhaust will bolt right up. good luck and enjoy boost :thumb:

thanx for the compliments man....i love my car more every day i drive it, LOL. but to answer your questions...

1. i have the turbo throttle body

2. yes, ive got the turbo T Stat housing with coolant lines running from near the top of the rad cap....or right around that vicinity.

3. i do not have an oil cooler.

4. SAFC, only thing thats piggybacking the ECU...

I also belive that engine failure will be a problem before i reach the max torque of this clutch....it shifts wonderfully now too...and i can run 8 PSI all the way to 6500 rpm with no slipage in every gear...also mind you, just to let people know how well these mechanics knew there shit.....

the mechanics took care of everythign during the install, they made sure i had the T throttle body, the Turbo T Stat setup, made sure i had coolant lines to the turbo, they tapped my oil pan for me when i said NOT to put a T oil pan on becuase i didnt have enough money at the time (i have since installed a T oil pan myself), took care of the IRP, suggested i buy an SAFC to monitor things....these guys knew what they were doign at all times and ive yet to have any problems with my car..so just a shout out to these guys!

oh and last thing, i do have the T exhaust, i thought i mentioned it earlier in the thread but maybe not? ive got all T exhaust from the exhaust mani back..:thumb:

if you want a cheap yet effective 2.5" turbo back either go with one of the rnr specials or do a combination of buschur 2.5" pressbent dp, 2.5" test pipe, and a pacesetter catback. i had this setup on my car and full weight on the 14b at 16psi with stereo i was still trapping 104 in the 1/4.
