Here you go, I know I promised a pic of this a while ago......Basically I chopped my AEM CAI down about 4 inchesabove the bend and then coupled the HRC intake pipe to it. This puts your air filter down low between your radiator and the SMIC that comes with the kit.

Do you notice any real gains? I was thinking along those lines one time but never got around to doing it, it accually increases turbo lag. Why, because it's more room for the turbo to draw air into........so yeah I didn't go with it. Hope it works for ya though!

It looks good but I dont think a cai would give you anything because the intercooler is what cools the air from your turbo, (98 turbo420a) is right it gives more room that you dont need. Think of it as a really big straw it would take you longer to get what you need than having a smaller one.

Not sure if it gives any gains or not since it has been on since day one. I just figured that colder air going in means colder air coming out, and then with the IC it will be even beter. None of my piping ever gets very hot so far so something must be working I suppose. The difference between the piping going into and out of the IC are very minimal. Maybe when I get the rebuild done and slap it on the dyno I'll dyno with and without and see which does better. :thumb:
Before the ring lands decided to let go though I hit a best of 14.7 on only 6PSI if that helps with number crunching. That run was with a pretty lame 2.3 60' time also.

I doubt it helps any if at all. The turbo compresses air...and generates a LOT of heat, then it's sent to the intercooler for a sligjht temperature drop. Having 10 degree cooler air going into the turbo to be immediately heated up seems futile...know what I'm saying?

Good idea tho

If if were actually 10 degrees you got out of it, heck ya itd be worth it since every little bit counts...but what I'm saying is that no matter if the temperature was 30 degrees lower, the air is going to get compressed to extreme temperatures anyhow...

I didn't know anyone made cold air kits for turbo's.....never seen one - got a link?

I agree with dudasd, he is right about that because with turbos you always want the coolest air going in. It will make a difference, not dramatic amounts, unless that longer piping causes lag to noticeably increase.

regardlesss of when the air gets cooled, it will be cooler overall.. PERIOD. Intercooler cools the air after its been compressed, you still can cool the air before it gets compressed and it will still be colder. the compressor does not automatically heat the air up to a certain temp regardless of outside temp. if its 90 out, the air goign to your engine will be hotter than if it was only 50 out. SO...a cold air intake would let colder air get to the turbo before compressor, than heat up but not as hot as it would have been, than get cooled again by the intercooler. dont try to argue this point... i have taken physics in high school and in college an i work for GEAE so i knwo what colder air does, whether its before or after compression.

basically, a cold air intake on a turbo would put colder air to the engine, just it may not be a hue difference

What takes longer to freeze? Boiling water or water at room temp? The specific characteristics of the colder air hitting the turbo are not known to me. But if the idea of an intercooler is to get the air colder, it would make more sense to achieve that one particular goal by obtaining your intake air from a location that is significantly cooler.
