By this summer I am planning on buying a GS and my dream is to turbo it. For now, I don't want wicked speed, my main goal is to keep the car reliable. I found out that a stage 1 hahn kit comes without a sidemount intercooler. I don't have lots of money now so I really don't wanna go stage 2 yet, thats like an extra 1,000 right? Well my question is, how safe is a stage one kit? I'm worried that without an intercooler, it will hurt the motor bad. Should I keep saving until I can by the intercooler, keep in mind I wouldn't set the PSI higher then recommended for stage 1. I tried to search up on this and I mostly found stage 2 info. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can buy a 1g SMIC and get some custom piping at a muffler shop and buy a boost controller if you don't wanna shell out the loot for their SMIC. Or like Siu said, if you have the funds, get the FMIC.

alright thanx for the response. Not sure what I'll do. Right now with installation it's ganna cost me 3100 for the stage 1 but then I will need a turbo timer and exhuast and etc....maaaaann this does get expensive. The stage 2 is like another 1,000.....I'm worried most about reliability aspecially with all that money for a turbo, i wouldn't want it to cause engine problems. Should I get new pistons and rods first and then turbo. I've read some people have seen bad problems without em but then people say if your only stage 2 it'll be fine. If you were me, wha would u do first?

Before you start to spend the money on the turbo, do a compression test on each of your cylinders. It'll show if your engine is capable of running a turbo w/o destroying itself. U can buy it at like Advanced Auto for like $25. If you have readings of like 180-200, you shouldn't have to worry bout nothin. If they are low, you'll need a bottom end rebuild or you'll kill the motor. Yeah, money adds up quick for that stuff, but if you like doing those types of things to your car then it's worth it :thumb:

thanx, yeah i'm def. interested in it. I just wish I knew more about it. Think i'll try to find some classes in college and hopefully i'll be able to start my own eclipse project. From some I hear eclipses have problems up the ass and if u don't know how to work engines, u shouldn't get one, yet i've been researching and it seems they have really good engines.

I def. will get an eclipse, just hope the compression test is good. Thanks for all the info :)

If you don't feel secure converting a GS/RS to turbo, you could always just take the route of buying a GST/GSX and then you don't have to worry about the stock motor holding up to the added boost, cause the 4g63 is meant to handle it. Just a suggestion.

oh no way, too many cases of crank walk i've heard about. The place I go to here even has problems with it. I don't want to add money to a car that I'm scared will shit out on me. I mean I fully respect any eclipse driver, I just don't have the money to take the chance on having to buy a new engine.

You take a high risk chance of doing that if you turbo a 420a. I'll be turboing mine soon, and i'm scared shitless of it crappin out on me. O well, only time will tell.

oh man! heh, i may have to wait then...but it's worth it. Good luck with your car :)

where do people read all these cases of crankwalk, jeez its not the frickin black death

a shop here told me to watch out for it. He said he knew people that had it, replaced engine, and got it back after 5,000 miles. It's enough to scare me...I mean why worry about having an engine that could die on u. It's been known to happen...I don't know, maybe around here there's more cases than usual but for a machanic here to tell me problems he's had with his costumers and crankwalk is enough to give me the hint.

It's a serious issue, one mitsubishi isn't taking responsibility for.

The 420A engine will NOT get crankwalk....that is it's advantage over the 4G63...

I am running the HRC Stage1 kit at 5psi, and have been safely boosting for 6,000 miles. I'm running the Vortech SFMU, 310cc injectors, and have the gauges to keep it all in check. Make sure your fuel pressure is perfect, and your EGT's are in check....and stay at recommended boost levels and the engine will last you a long long time.

(I recommend running a compression test before any isntallation. If all the numbers are 160+, and close to eachother....then go for it)

Dont rush anyithing !!! dont rush in and get the cheapest turbo kit why not upgrade your internals first then no need to worry thats my plan, i know i cant go with out a car for even a week. So do whats smart and dont over pay a mechanic. ask around i got i kid that works with me that has been doing turbo kits on Hondas and Miatas, that know a 420A responds well to boost most mech. DONT.. Look around save money look for oportunnities if worst case then shop around....btw Custom turbo kit is the way to go, im half way there!!!!!

is it cheaper to get a stage 1 and find a intercooler and piping somewhere else?
