iv done my resaerch on the difference between the neon and eclipse tranny's. However i have yet to come across this question. My friend has an 02 neon tranny that he is giving me for free. Its got about 75k on it. I know it will bolt up to my rs but i was wondering which one has better gearing for my driving style. I have a 95 rs that is my dd. I hate going on the highway because at 70mph its at about 3000 rmp in 5th gear. This is a little high revved for my taste. So my question is:
Is the neon tranny for cruise friendly? I would like to lower my rpm at any given speed compared to the eclipse tranny. I've looked at the final drive ratios to both trannys and i honestly don't know what they mean. So i would like someone to just give me a definate answer.

Damnation, I thought I posted to this, LOL.

Anyway, the tranny you have is probably a 3.55 (check here: http://www.neons.org/forumdodge/trans.htm to verify). This is kinda an opinionated situation.

I had the 3.55 in my daily NA eclipse for several thousand miles. The engine that was in there was a 10.5 comp engine, but other than that pretty close to stock. I didn't like the 3.55 because it was so "doggy". I ended up driving around in 4th most od the time. highway cruising was right around 2300-2400rpm @70mph. But it was too much of annoyance to me.

BUT some people liked it in their daily. So go figger.

Now, you might have the 3.94 with the .81 in there. That's what we have in our eclipse's.

As for the formula, I had ti at one time. Its on the internet somewhere, just google it up.

Just a quick input on driving.

I had a Talon ESi with the 3.94 gearing and ran around 3100 rpms at 70-72 mph.

I also have/had (selling it today) an 03' SRT4 that runs around 2350 rpms at 70 mph.

And I had a Cobalt that would do about 2100 rpms at 70.

In my opinion, just stick with the 3.94. Even the SRT has trouble on the freeway at 70 at those rpms. I mean, I can move if I need to, but even up a decent grade, I am back to 4th gear. And keep in mind this is with 265 whp and 270 w/torque. And the Cobalt was useless at those rpms. It was always gear hunting at the first sign of a load. So, I can't imagine it's going to be much fun with an N/T, which I know it's limitations.

Yeah, you might be like, sweet!!! 34 mpg on the freeway vs. 32.5 (which is what i'd consistently get). So, I don't really think it's worth the mpg jump to lose city acceleration, ease of driving, and who knows what else.

I don't think also it's much of a reliability issue as you'd think. Look at Civic's, they're like at 3500 rpms at those speeds!

thanks for the input. i was just wondering becuase i drive from memphis, to dayton, ohio (1000 miles round trip) about every 2 or 3 weeks so i like to save every penny on gas that i can. Plus the exhaust just gets really annoying at 3500 rpm for 9 hours
