What does a resonator do? Does it sound like a bad idea to replace the catalytic converter with a resonator to gain more horsepower? Will that do any harm to my car?

I removed my resonator about 3 months ago, i got it cut out and a piece of pipe welded in its place.. i didn't expect a horsepower gain or anything i just wanted to be a little louder, i got the noise i wanted but there was no noticable power change.

Wow...guess no one sees the big bold highlighted text that says

""Use the Search" is not an acceptable response. Link to the answer instead."

You can see it right at the bottome of this page. As for the answer...see above ;)

LOL...honestly...I'm sorry man.

To tell you the truth i never notice the sign that says, not do what Curtis did. Well, since I feel like an ass here goes...

A resonator acts as a muffler of sorts as mentioned above. All it does is add a larger chamber to your exhaust pipe for exhast to swirl in and produce a throatier, deeper sound.

Replacing the catalytic converter witht a resonator would be that same as replacing it with a test pipe, or a straight piece of replacement pipe.

It won't harm your car, you might get a CEL but thats it. Your exhaust will be a little louder and you might gain a few horsies.

Hope this helps, once again, sorry for being an ass, I am going to RTFM right.....NOW.:|

i just put a glass pack in the place of my resonator,,,my exhaust had a weedeater tone to it when i got on it it doesnt know i noticed a little top end loss but it felt like i got a little more bottom end, backpressure maybe,i dunno

it was the thrush brand from advance,it was the 25 inch and it fit nicely, you will have to get it welded in place, the factory pipe is 2"or so and the smallest one thrush makes that will fit is the 2and a quarter,i tried clamps but even with a half inch impact i still got leaks, having drove it today im sure of the bottom end increase,i gutted my cat. and put an aerospeed dual muffler on it first thing when i got it,that hurt backpressure im sure, but the glas pack helped and now i dont sound like a can of pissed off bumble bees!itll work till i get a cat back,if i ever do.

im not sure there is room to fit a glasspack in place of the cat,the o2 sensor bunghole is awfully close,it would be eisier to gutt the cat,it unbolts, just dont mess up the gaskets!

just go test pipe instead of glasspack or resonator, even though they have almost same flow, test pipe will be completely straight hru flow, cheaper and better.

if you put a straight pipe there it sounds like a can of pissed of bumble bees, the glass pack quietens it down, just my opinion, some people like the pissed weedeater sound!;)

i am not sure if it sounds like that, but usually replacing the restrictive cat with a straight pipe will increase flow and if you need it quieter just get a tunable muffler, like some have the resonator to louden or quiet, in order to quiet my exhaust i had to put a glass pack inline, but reverse.
