How to identify Block for 95 or 96+
I read something about the tangs or different or something.
I was trying to figure out what year block I have before I order the wrong bearings.
The engine in my car is not the original block so I have no idea what year block I have. I am at the beginning of rebuilding the bottom end of my motor. It is apart so what do I need to look for to figure out what year the block is.
Thanks for the help.

do you know if the head is from the same block?? there are stamps on the drivers side of the head and there is a stamp on the motor mount on the passengers side but if its been swapped it might not be the same. im pretty sure there is a stamp on the block which is either underneather where the header is by the freeze plugs or the oposite side. get a flash light out and check those areas.

I don't thing the head is the same as the block. The only numbers I've seen stamped in the block is:
2567
4667642
Can I not just look where the main bearings go on the block and see where the tangs are.

Put the two halves of the bearing side by side. If they're from a '95 block, they will be identical. If they're from a 96-99 block, the notches will be on opposite sides of the ends of the bearings.
This is not an engine management question, by the way. I'm moving your thread to the bolt-on tech forum.

It has nothing to do with the thrust bearing, you are thinking of a 4g63. It is all about the bearing tang on the bearing. 95 have the tang on the same side if you sit them side by side. 96 plus has them on the opposite side.
Here is a set of 95 bearings, note that the tangs are all on the same side.
Here is a set of 96+ bearings, note that the tangs are on the opposite side.
The bearings in the picture that you posted are 96+ bearings.
