Im looking for some cheap efficient ways to add some power to my car. I need some advice...are cam gears in any of these categories?
1. worth the money, and
2. easy to install (if not, how much could i expect to be charged professionally)

Well, I can't say from experience but CAMS are probably worth the $ to HP. From what I understand its one of the better gains you can get from NT's if you've done your intake/exhaust first. I know you can have a rough idle after doing CAMS. Also, I don't think they would be that hard to install but you have to watch you timing marks etc when installing (i think). I'm guessing you should have them done when u get you t-belt done that way their is no extra labor. I'm guessing it would cost about $200 in labor to install.

you can bet at least 200 and also you may want to concern yourself with passing inspection, i have heard bad stories about new cams and the leatest emsion laws. I line in NJ and i know CAL has some tough ones also.

he said cam gears, not cams
some have said they got good results from this mod and its worth the money. you just need to tune your car.. and put it on a dyno and play with it..

its a ***** to install.. iknow because i just took my head off. if you play tojust put on cam gears.. id do this

get a AFX udp while your at it. you can get away with leaving the crank pulley on because you can just cut the timing belt cover off.. since you would want to leave it off anyhow because you need to adjust the cam gears..
but the vc comes off simple.. the cam followers come off with some muslce.. then if you jack the motor up some you can take the cams out

you have to be very careful though, because you dont want to move the cam gears while trying to get that bolt out, because it will turn and open the valves (bad)

so you need a special tool, my tbelt snapped and my valves was already bent. so i just use a big screwdriver and some muscle on the socket wrench to get them off..

but it depends

if you are near 60k.. then do the whole timing belt change, get that udp and the cam gears

wow sounds like im in for some damn work...i got about 82k on my car, bought it at 77k and i have no idea if the previous owner changed the t belt. thats a pain...thanks for the help

just time everything right, so when you change one thing you can do everything at once, meaning timing belt, gaskets, pulleys cams and cam gears. Alot cheaper if done all at once.

changing every thing at once: timing belt, cams, cam gears, springs retainers, water pump etc is probably easier than doing it all seperately. You can buy yourself cam gears and put them on and not see a increase in power and if they aren't adjusted right you may see a loss. The only correct way to tune them is on a dyno and it's not a 5 min. process it takes a lot of guess and check. It'd be more worthwhile to take your car to your mechanic and have him advance the intake cam 2 deg. and retard the exhaust cam 2 deg. I know people that have good results with that set up and you don't have to change your cam gears to do that. It's not a bad idea to change the timing belt then too.

also while apart i'd suggest you change valve stems and piston rings.. just for fun cuz you don't wanna pull your engine out again to change somethin as cheap as piston rings.. i know from experience.. i am ignoring my piston rings right now and just keepin my oil topped off.. i'm slowly loosing patience.. i'm about to just go finance a 2002 eclipse

so for the 420 a motor.. 2 degrees advanced for teh intake. and 2 degrees retarted for the exhaust.. r u sure?

that'd be your best bet, I know people that have good results with a modest adjustment like that on both 420As and other motors alike, it will create a little overlap and also helps efficiency. It will make your idle a little lumpier but I think a lumpy idle sounds awesome, but that's completely up to you.

Does anyone know if 2deg adv or retard would be a tooth off or is there and different way this is done with stock cam gears? I have never done engine timing so i am wondering.
