Ok, so when i start my car it kinda idles for about 2 seconds then boggs down pass 1000 rpm and shuts off and the check engine light comes on. But if i start it and give it some gas its fine. Someone help. thanks

if it looks like a duck walks like a duck its a duck sounds way to much like a vacuum leak i had

I would get that code checked out, borrow a scanner from the zone or advance. Turning up the idle isn't going to help your problems, sounds like a IAC or fuel issue, scan it.

X2. Take advantage of OBD 2!

Read the code and go from there.

I agree with the IAC. Very common problem on these.

this may sound out of the but change the relay on the fire wall one is for fuel pump and one for ecu thay have to work togather to keep your car run if one is bad it well shut down o yah some car have three relays change them all go to junk yard or dealer for relays hit me back all so check fuse box under hood 30amp engine moteur

Wow, Everyone is missing the most obvious possible cause for this issue.

4g63 Owners, please remember that the OP is running an NT car with a 420a engine. Most of your help won't do anything but lead them on a wild goosechase.

Upon starting the car it Idles like crap and dies, but if the throttle is tapped to give the engine some revs it suddenly smooths out and idles fine right?

Check the coolant level. $5 says that there's a big air bubble in the coolant freaking out the CTS. When you rev the engine the water pump pushes coolant up into the housing and suddenly the CTS gets a proper reading and everything smooths out. After burping the system be sure to double check for leaks and cracks in the overflow system, that's usually where the air bubbles get in.

I am not quite sure where you get your info or diag skills but they are waayyy of the radar scale.

Coolant temp is the LAST thing that would cause a rough idle upon first start up.

If you went, and drained all the coolant out of your car, and started it up, it would run perfectly normal upon start up, given you have no other problems.

Again, read the code and fill us in so we can go from there.

Try it. I bet your car will run like shit.

How do I know? Oh yeah, 3 seperate 420a's that I've PERSONALLY had this exact issue with, my 95 and 2 97's, not to mention countless others that have had this same issue. Do a search on 2gnt.com

The CTS IS the major indicator for the ECU to switch from open to closed loop and if it's not immersed in coolant it won't work properly. This freaks out the ECU and throws the cold cycle fuel trims out the window.

Learn the car before you try to call me out.

If the issue were an IAC then revving the engine would not fix the issue. The second the car returned to idle it would go back to running like crap.

Whoa dude not starting flame wars here.

First. I have. Its in the drive way. No radiator coolant or hoses. Runs like a champ. 96gs 420a motor.

Three? Please dude. I build these for a living practically. Built 10+ Owned 7 in the family. :thumb:

Im saying i don't believe his problem is directly indicative of a CTS sensor. There are many more common possible answers it could be.

I agree if the vehicle were already at normal operating temp, yes this could be a problem, but at a cold start i think this is highly unlikely.

BOTTOM LINE----You cannot diag a car off of two sentences. Lets get some more info on what is going on and go from there.

Be easy before YOU start calling out people. We are here to help each other out.

Perhaps your 96 ECU isn't freaked out by the CTS not being immersed? Different year ECUs have different quirks. :idontknow: And no offense but I've had as many DSM's as you and then some. Almost all of them have been 420A's (but strangely never a 96)

I do know that I've seen the exact symptoms that the OP is describing multiple times and 90% of the time it was a bubble in the coolant system, and it happens when the car is dead cold. Usually the overflow tank cap cracks and it pulls air back in as the engine cools leaving a nice big air bubble around the CTS

To the OP, does it ever sound like a toilet is flushing when you give the engine some revs?

Lots of blah blah in here but I only see one simple start answer.

Hey OP, c'mere :shhh: let me say this straight out. CHECK THE CEL!!! That's what its there for :p

Then maybe we can work from there.

why are there so many 4g63's posting here???

Anyways, I had a simular problem, needed my fuel filter replaced odly enough, bottom line is there are a lot of reasons this could be happening like everyone is saying a CEL will help greatly, if you dont have a code scanner autozone will scan it for you for free.
