Hello, I am one of the lucky guys with a 95 n/a which still has the secondary air injection system still installed on it. I read this was recalled and should be removed (I understand why, it's annoying as piss) yet when I took it to the local Chrysler dealership the man ran my vin and said everything was up to date for the recalls. I said this wasn't possible, the secondary air is still there. He disagreed so I left. I don't trust them touching my car anyways!

So does anyone know the proper way to remove this? I read on here that you can solder a resistor somewhere...But wouldn't I still need to reflash the ecu? Any advice would be appreciated, and I've attached a pic for good measure. It seems to be a pretty vague topic, I tried searching a few times but that didn't fully answer my question.

I've been searching for this same info. Any help would be appreciated. I would like to take care of this myself without a dealer.

sorry for being a newb, but what parts exactly are the secondary air injection system.

He is talking about the pipe running into the side of the header and the bottom of the air filter housing.
I've seen that before on a Talon, didn't know what it was.
This isn't a recall that I've ever heard of.
I'm not sure on how to remove it.:toobad:

The pulsed secondary air injection system was only installed on early 1995 models and it was recalled. The dealer should remove it for you. Complete removal involves removing the hoses and actuator, capping the metal tube on the downpipe and reflashing the ECU.

Unfortunately, the dealer sometimes does a half-ass job and doesn't flash the ECU... If left unflashed, it will expect some sort of feedback from the PSAI system even though it's no longer there: hence the CEL and hence the resistor to attempt to fool the ECU.

My car had the PSAI system removed by the dealer, and I've lived with the CEL ever since. As you begin more heavily modifying the car, CEL's are unavoidable.

I got an early 95 too.
I have this sticker under the hood, saying something was up dated or up graded.
I'll have to go look at exactly what it says, but I'll bet its about the secondary air injection being removed.
VelocitàPaola : Do you have a sticker the factory put on the underside of your hood? From when it was removed?

So have you never tried the resistor fix? If so did it not work? I was planning to do this and I've read that it needs a 5.5kohm resistor. Can anyone verify this? I'm not finding a ton of info through searches.

Thanks

mtskibum- I read that same thing about the resistor...

The only thing I'm weary of is this-

There's a small vacuum line (green) going from the secondary air to a splitter which isn't pictured. This splitter goes to the back of the engine, and splits into the red line I have drawn here. I don't know what to do with the green line if I remove the secondary air components because it would leave an open end on the splitter. Just cap it maybe?

Thanks for the replies thus far :)

Either cap it or run a new line to the EGR system without the splitter.

What he said. Does anyone have any info/personal experience on whether the resistor works or not? Thanks.

I can say the resistor trick does work, well so far so good anyways. However i couldn't find a 5.5k ohm resistor, radio shack had a 5.6k ohm resistor. I just used an egr vacuum tube from a later model that i found in the junkyard and soldered the resistor and no cel. :hellyeah:

Have same problem, have to sell the car, dealer refuses to do anything as "VIN does not come under recall", though it does have recalled part installed.

Throws error code P0412
Recall # is EMR-99-001

Draggin, great it worked for you - but what exactly have you soldered and where? I get it it's 5.5 KOhm resistor, or 5.6, so did you solder it into the plug, directly into harness? And if you solder it in, why bother removing that piece?

Please, help, I MUST sell the car. I can reset code with OBD2 scanner, but it comes right back up. Flashing PCM costs $100, and that's $100 out of my pocket.

just for everyone's use:

here's recall pdf, with entire technical description on what to do:

Sitting at the dealership right now having the recall done to my Talon ESi now as we speak. Called them on Wednesday, and setup the appointment for today. No hassle. :)

ECU is being reflashed as I type this.

I asked the service rep about some of the "95's" not having the recalls on them // some of the people who have been denied the recalls, and according to him all 95's should have the recall for it if the secondary air injection system is still in place. No questions asked.

It's good to hear they're still supporting such old cars.
