whats the base timing for a 420a? is it 10 degrees? i just want to know before i take it to go get it checked to see if my timing if off........................................ANY ONE OUT THERE ok 25 people have viewed this tread and no one knows what the base timing should be???

Ill give it a try....

10-14 is about where most 420a's idle at and while driving can get up around 40. Every engine is different. I was seeing around 12 on the datalogger at idle. 12 is what I run on MS... If you followed these directions and torque everything down to spec (factory manual) then timing shouldn't be an issue (link at bottom). As far as the timing light goes I don't think you will have much luck with that. If you don't have a datalogger then here is a great logger that I use to have. Well if your just trying to figure out if its off....this ofcourse as long as there is no harmonic balancer on.......There is a triangle on the crank pulley that the timing belt goes on, and this needs to be one notch before strait up (one notch to the left), and then on your cam gears there are two hash marks on the side that will either line up in the middle at about the level of the top of your head or they will be on the outsides of the cam gears. They need to be in the middle and at the same level. Then crank the engine over a few times, either by hand or key, and then line the crank back up to one notch to the left. Now recheck your cam gears and they should meet in the middle again at teh level of the top of your head, if not your timing is off. Keep in mind that since these motors are interferance motors the timing can only jump two teeth before a valve will contact a piston.
Good luck.

You can't shoot it with a light unless you index the pulley. To index the pulley you would have to find exact TDC with a dial indicator and then make the appropriate marks against something on the block etc.

My car runs around 10 degrees on the MSnS at idle.
