What do you think about neons? They do have a 420a motor. Is it scarry to race a shoe box?

the new srt 4's will be the threat. when i was stock i beat a pretty modded neon on the highway easily, he just wouldn't give up, so i kept on handing his ass to him. they were pretty cool though. funny as hell, they mooned some honda on the way to Nopi (2001 i believe)

The old body style neons: SOHC 132 HP, DOHC 150 HP THe Eclipse 140hp.

I've got both a 2gnt A/T and a 95 Neon SOHC. I've modded both and raced both. The Eclipse has Header, Cat-back, Cold air, Dodge Stratus side gears, and an Under-drive pulley. Before I put the trans gears and pulleys in I ran a 17.653 1/4. I'm not sure what it runs now.

The Neon has: Crane springs and retainers, Crane Cam 250-2sr-8, milled 0.010", three angle valve job, back cut intake valves, port matched exhaust ports, port matched stock exhaust manifold, Lightly polished intake ports, Mopar Computer, Mopar performance clutch. I ran a 15.660 at 88.xxx mph at Rockingham the first night it was on the road. That was with the stock 165R13 wheels that are tiny. My best 60 time was 2.32. That's all motor work. No bolt ons and very little traction. The next step is wheels which I might have by the weekend. I'm hoping for 0.2 off but we'll see. From there I'll be doing suspension work cause it sucks.

In a straight line stock vs stock and equal drivers... the neon should win by a hair simply because it's a lighter car. However, when I drive home from work in the neon, then hop in the eclipse I have to change EVERYTHING about my driving habits. The neon is horribly squishy and unresponsive in comparison to the eclipse. Slalom or road course the eclipse has at least a better base set-up.
Doug

p.s. The SRT-4 won't be competition for the 2gnt. It would be more in the class of taunting the stock GST boys. 215 hp in a neon body.... I'm already hurting the honda boy's feelings spanking them in my n/a neon. Turbo neon will just make them cry.

yeah i was thinking that it might would take me also. especially since it was modded. i had my parts on order but hadn't gotten them yet to put them on. maybe my car was just a stock freak or something because i won a LOT of races i shouldn't have been able to, for instance an older 5.0 stang or an older IROC. my car really pulled hard, a shame it had to go... :( man i loved it...

there is no way you beat a 5.0 or an iroc in your stock 4-banger unless thier motors were blown up.
stock 5.0: 225 hp, 275 ft/lbs torque, 1/4 mile time 14.9
stock iroc w/305: 210 hp, 270 ft/lbs torque, 1/4 mile time 15.1
stock iroc w/350: 220 hp, 320 ft/lbs torque, 1/4 mile time 14.8
stock dsm: 140 hp, 13* ft/lbs torque, 1/4 mile time 16.*

tell us more about how you beat v-8's in your stock 4-banger

i'm serious, i have no reason to lie my cars gone now i have no reason to say it's better than it is. i beat two different irocs, had witnesses both times. and trust me both were racing. and i was stock with them also. with one race i had my girl with me and we were going to blockbuster. lined up with an blue iroc that had the t-tops off. light hit green and we both wasn't sure if we were going to go, he nailed it then i did. we were close until the top of 3rd or beginning of 4th. then i started pulling and getting happy :) got a pretty good lead on him before we had to turn. the second time a friend was with me and there was an older guy in a red iroc with the t tops on. left him after 2nd and he got mad because i beat him and did a fly by. the time a beat a 5.0 i was by myself. we both reved at the light, both spun and i left him pretty easy we both let off after mid of 3rd because the areas known for cops. i also beat, i think it was a 96-97 or so stang GT. we were on the highway went from about 40-85 real quick. stayed even for awhile but i was slowly pulling when we had to let off because of traffic. trust me i know it's odd. i thought i'd lose most of the time but it's fun thats why i did it anyways. maybe the people just couldn't drive, or maybe they were auto's, i know the stangs weren't, and one of the irocs weren't not sure about the other one though.

I dont think they made 80's IROCS with manuals

my friend has an 87 IROC with a few mods

Yeah I don't know about beaten those cars in your eclipse but you never know bad drivers can lead to alot of races lost

anyway
"the new srt 4's will be the threat"
umm yeah against a N/A Eclipse the SRT-4 will eat it
alive!

FYI guys, the neon RT has the 420A block, but that's about it. The average neon dosen't. The head design is different, air flow is different, timing, lift, all that is different. Therefore when you hear someone say you have a neon motor, all you have in common is the block, and that's the RT version that has it.

Jason, I ran a mustang 5.0 on the road and I was slowly pulling the whole time. He had an manuel with a borla exaust. He sounded like he was shifting good, too. I don't have much done, but I definatly beat him. He followed me to my work and wanted to know what I had. He was one of those Muscle Heads that think were slow. He's know a believer.

both of you guys are full of crap! there is no way in hell that you beat an iroc or a 5.0. i posted the stock times higher up. now how can you tell me that your stock, or almost stock, eclipse beat a car that runs high 14's. unless the underdrive pulley, exhaust, and cai knocked 2 seconds off your 1/4 mile time.
i'm calling B.S.
by the way i owned an iroc with a 350 and i ran a 14.23 at 104 mph.
all it had was a hypertech street runner chip, a flowmaster muffler, and k&n drop in filters.
anybody else with a 2 liter inline 4 pushing out 113 hp to the wheels beating cars with doulbe the horse power?? maybe you could teach me a thing or two beacuse all i can get out of my eclipse is mid to low 16's. please give me a clue as to how you got your car to out perform a v-8 with over 200 hp and close or over 300 ft/lbs of torque. plus they only weigh just a little over 3000 lbs. so don't tell me that 200-300 lbs is gonna make that big of a difference, especially when you had someone in your car.
BULLSH!T!!!!!

so you are telling me that with a 118-120 hp to the wheels you can beat a car that runs mid 14's. so since i have 138- 140 to the wheels i should be able to hang with high 13 to low 14 cars? do you have your own driving school or what? i mean that is impossible unless they were not racing.

This is half right. All neons except the 2003 SRT have 420 blocks. Not just the RT. I have a neon block in my car right now while my original is being rebuilt. It came from a SOHC neon motor.

And for all these people posting about beating IROC's and 5.0's, it's highly unlikely that you would beat either or with a stock or lightly modded car. Either A: they were not good drivers. or B: they were just toying with you.

you guys can say all you want about my wing. I could care less. If you don't want to believe me, fine. I had a 2000 mustang before my talon and it wasn't near as fast as my talon.

same here, except i didn't have a big wing, i had a stock wing. and it's not like a have a reason to lie. i don't even have the car anymore, but i'll be getting another one. hope it's not to long. anyways, if you don't believe me oh well, doesn't matter that way either.

I'm not trying to pick on you but I want to make sure everyone realizes what our cars are and aren't capable of. If you had a 2000 mustang, it must not have been a V8. There is no replacement for displacement.
Unless you have a turbo kit, no 4 banger is going to beat a V8 with an intake, exhaust, UDP, and Hi-perf plugs and wires.

Sorry should have said that. It was a 3.8 v6. But before you say "Theres no replacement for displacement" Lets think about it. 3.8 V6 in a mustang. Thats almost TWICE my displacement. So it should be almost twice as fast. Its not. The 2.0 is faster than the 3.8 V6. The Mustang stock has 190 hp and the NT Eclipse/Talons produce 140. Thats not a huge differance for 1.8 liters more.

hey guys, im gonna have to agree with snoopy here, i think eclipses are better than we think. i mean im not saying that everyday they can smoke a 5.0 or an IROC 100% of the time, but i did race a 1990 Mustang 5.0 once at a hugely popular racing spot around me. A bunch of people saw the race, i kept pulling ahead little by litte, and he did have exhuast on his car. I was clearly ahead of him when we both had to slow down for traffic. im not saying i could beat him all the time, but i did smoke him in the race in my car (see me mods in my profile).

That's not how displacement works. Just because has almost twice the displacement, doesn't mean it can produce twice the horsepower. Hell my bike has 0.6 L and is pushing 90 HP. Does that mean that our cars should be pushing close to 200+ HP?!?! No!

And bryo1001, I smoked an R1 on the hwy. Granted he wasn't paying attention, but I past him. But I gaurantee you, in a line up he would KILL me.
