Got a Question, When I've been drag racing lately, I shift my automatic from 1st, 2nd to drive....I was wondering is that bad for the transmission? Should i do anything aftermarket if I was going to do that....I know this may sound like a dumb Question but the last 3 cars i've owned have been manual transmissions so i have no idea if it is ok to shift from gear to gear.....

Actually I just found the answer on the forum some where else, just a few minutes ago, so my new ? to go along with this one is, what Shift Kit would i use to be able to make a "manumatic" or to be able to shift, and what other parts should I look for to be able to do this?

What? OMG Manual tranny swap. You can't just buy a bolt on conversion kit for AUTO---> MANUAL. Get used to auto if you aren't swapping the tranny.

No I'm not saying just swapping it out into a manual, i'm saying i want to be able to drive my automatic as a DD but when I want to drag race it be able to switch through the gears, from what i hear there is aftermarket kits that can do this i.e. shift kits, torque converters ect...i wondering what there is and where can i get these...I'm talking kits that will help make shifts more efficent with less lag time between shifts...

www.importperformancetrans.com is a great place for Auto DSM stuff.

If you haven't already, buy the Trans Lab shift kit and the IPT end clutch kit and install those. It is a wold of difference.

Thanx, Just checked it out and I would really like to order....I'm wondering tho, what will these all do for me? Just curious, will they eliminate slow shifts? Will I still be able to drive the car like normal when I'm not dragging as far as it shifting itself and downshifting it's self? Will I be able to shift when I drag? or will I even need to shift when i drag? I'm just curious, I got the money and the time next weekend to install it, So i need to know, thanx again for all the help!

I just realized that your a non turbo auto, it cant get much worse. If i were you i would look into a turbo rather than drop alot of money on a trans that wont create power anyhow. Im not hatting on our setup but if you really want speed and power turbo is where you should start

Yeah, I don't think any companies make a "manumatic" shifter like what you're thinking of. I know IPT does for the 4G63, but not the 420A equivalent. You could always try the TCUGO...

Yeah I know you ain't hating on my set up, it's all good, from what i'm told your right LOL....I'm not going to turbo the car tho, I'm adding nitrous to it instead...the 420a is actually a pretty good engine from what i read, i don't know why it gets such a bad rap on this site...but anyways, there has to be a shift kit out there some where that can allow the driver to shift..I saw one on this site from ebay but apparently the guy doesn't make it anymore....I hope i come across something, i think it would def make a difference, because it seems like the automatic lags when drag racing....

Search more man, and call ipt and talk to them. Also look up the RMT mod. I don't know if it works for the 420a but it does for the rest of us.

And please stop "manual" shifting your stock a/t. It's not good for it unless it's built to handle the abuse.

You can shift up just not down when racing from all I have read and take'n a lot of fat off Ms piggy and that will help ya tranny, yes a shift kit and a hi stall tourqe converter along should help quite a bit even though you have a low output motor everything and anything you can do should help.
A tranny rebilt to full race specs at least a grand but if ya only want better shifts the shop should open ya passages and install a kit for about $400-500.
I'm going with a street tranny kit and a better tq converter.

We N/A eclipse owners can run quick w/o a turbo just not fast as hell the guys at 2gnt.com have proved that an Underdog can fight too! :)
