You should always do a compression test to have a general idea of the health of your engine. Do one first, then come back with the results.

A compression test is always a GREAT idea, not necessary, but a very good idea. I never did a compression test on my car when I decided to add nitrous, but I would recommend it. I put in a new h.g., cams, valve train parts, and looked over things when I did the cams. I personally felt everything was in good enough shape to go for it and not worry about the test. ;)

Well, sure... that's fine if you have an intimate knowledge of the condition of your engine's components; but for the rest of us who don't want to take everything apart just for an inspection, a compression test is the best choice. :p
