hows everyone doing i just recently bought a 97 ATX gs off of my friend....not a bad car but...
it has a spun rod bearing, and the engine in general is a little on the weakside so
1.what i was originally planning to do was a gs-t swap, i did a little reading and ofund out that my engine might be reversed? people also said that i should have just bought a gs-t car to begin with, but at the price i paid for this car i couldnt beat it.....this idea would be my first choice.....reading the complaints about the swap its no more that putting an srt-4 engine in a 1gen neon....
2. so ok maybe no on the swap, so what about a build up on the original engine, well i fiqured since the engine is looking to great i swap out the block for a built block, and just turbo that..this is just an idea not something i would really want to do
3. what about installing a stock gs engine and turbo that for now according to the information i have recieved.....this would be my second choice

now i know alot more goes into a car when you turbo the enine besides whats held in the engine bay, in know about the fuel system and exhust and other items, i also see that running 8psi or over could be dangerous on some what stock internals and stock injectors but all things take time, this car will not be driven at all until the engine is running sooo im not pressed for time.....new to dsm but not new to cars....:dsm: :laser:

It's good to see that you did a little research before posting.

I would strongly dicourage the 4G63 swap. What's the point? When your done, you will have spent thousands of dollars for another 2.0L FWD car. Unless you were able to use the 4G63 engine in conjunction with the AWD tranny, which would essentially double the cost of this operation, I don't see a point at all. Even then, with the amount you'll spend on the swap, you could have bought a GS-T and gone through much less hassle.

Build the 420A and turbocharge it. If you're willing to spend all that money on a 4G63 swap, you can afford $3500-$5000 to build the 420A engine with forged internals and put together a turbo kit. Once you start modifying this platform, you'll find that the 420A is a very capable engine, and its only downside when compared to the 4G63 counterparts is the fact that it doesn't come in an AWD version.

you bring up a great point, now just comes the hard part
buying a stock gs engine
or a built block

the whole engine bay looks like a garbage pail im sad to say.....corrosion everywhere.....

so i was thinking about the built block but i think im going to need to replace everything.... but i think either way i need to replace everything.....so i think im gonna go with the built block and just try to piece together and entire engine

hmmmm:confused:

That's what most of us do anyway... go to a local junkyard, buy an old 2.0L 420A block (also found in DOHC Neons and Avengers), get it cleaned up, then build it up and swap it into the car.

I did that, and now have my old block sitting at home in the garage. Unfortunately, home is about 1500mi. away from me right now, otherwise I'd be willing to sell it to you.

yea i have to look around,

do you have any opinions about this http://howellautomotive.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=1430

Its nice but pricey, you could get a really nice built head on 2gnt or ebay from someone im sure for about 500.00--- 700.00. Then people are always parting out there totaled cars on there with built shortblocks, with low miles for around 900.00---1500.00. that altogether is around 1900.00---2500.00 once shipping gets ya, and thats for real nice setups you could get more basic blocks and heads for way cheaper. then with the money you save you could piece together your own turbo kit, or buy a used one off 2gnt. theres one on there now for 1600. ect ect. you get the point.

Always though, its your car and if you are more comfortable buying the longblock as one and doing less work and save time then its definately a nice piece if you can afford it. BTW i know time isnt a problem to you, but howell is really slow.

i think i know what i am going to do......this month my friendds and i are going to pull the engine and take a look at the block if its alright, i am going to take a trip down to a shop and have them take alot at it. they are very knowledgeable, so i can tell them what i want and we can set up an engine.....

the only thing is i need an engine lift, anyone know where to get a decent one?

PepBoys has a decent one for about $150. You can also rent one. I rented a hoist locally for about $40/day - a good choice if you only do this once, but it's probably better to just buy one if you'll do it again.

just buy an engine lift and stand. you need to take your time and do your build right the first time to be happy. so it will probably be on the stand for a month LOL. waiting on parts ect.

Harbor Frieght has good prices on stands and lifts. :thumb:

Forget all about that swap nonsense.

yea the swap is def out....

so u think a 750lb stand will do the trick?

considering the long block is somewhere in the 300lb range

or should i get the 1000lb stand....

i know it doesnt hurt to have more support i was just wondering if u guys had any suggestions

i've had my heart set on that 2.2 howell crate for a while now. but i'm still in school and have too many expenses and not enough income to even consider it for a few years :( buuut it's a dream haha.

howell 2.2 stroker crate motor with a concept illusions turbo kit (turbonetics t3/t04b). at that point i'd have everything fully built so i'd like to run 20-25psi. ps this is my 5 year plan *cough dream*

i know it's hard to judge but can anyone give me a range of what kind of whp that setup would yield?
