I was wondering if there would any advantages to keeping my stock exhaust piping on for now and just have a test pipe and a aftermarket muffler?

there would be some benefit but nothing spectacular. i had just an aftermarket muffler and it makes a little difference but you might as well just wait till you can get some piping bent or but a catback. i have tried just a muffler and having a custom catback made and im still not happy with it so im on the hunt for a catback. so it is your choice but if i was you i would wait you might as well do it all at once and save the money of having the muffler on now then having to pay to put and exhaust or having something custom bent and having your muffler rewelded on.

Sure, better flow less restriction. Your question is would there be advantages. YES! How much depends. But if you do go with the test pipe, get the "hi-flow" cat. In our state it has the effect of passing the visual inspection of nosy eyes.

Don't spend more than $50 on building your own test pipe and having a friend install it. No legit muffler shop in the country wil replace a cat with a test pipe, as its illegal. You will get a nice, ricey rasp to your exhaust with a test pipe and a muffler. Just so you know. Replace the cat with a glasspack (Thrush, Cherry Bomb, etc.) and you will get the incresed flow without the crappy ricer sounds.

Air can only flow as fast as the smallest part of the exhuast. If you put a high flow cat on there then it wont be the cat slowing it down it'll be the piping. As far as a good sound,

I have a 2.25" custom made piping with a high flow cat, and a high flow muffler. I believe its OBX (got it for free) I love the way it sounds. It sounds like a tuned 4 cylinder and not like a bunch of bee's in a coffee can. Unless you are going turbo I highly recommend a 2.25" exhaust piping. The high flow cat will definately help with some bigger piping and a different muffler though.
