Question about engine trouble in my 1.8....

I was wondering if you guys could give me some ideas of what is possibly wrong with my 1.8 engine.

I was driving on the highway (65-70mph) and all of the sudden i just lost all accelearation power and couldn't go above 35-40mph.
No smoke, clunk, or anything like that.
By the time I got home it was banging pretty loud and couldn't keep it idling.

Still no oil came pouring out and no smoke coming out of the engine.

There is oil in the engine.

I can start the car but the engine just clunks and pings and won't idle.


Any ideas of what could of possibly happened. There are about 120,000 miles or so on the engine.

what do you mean by clunked and pinged? are these mechanical clunks? or is it the engine misfireing? if its not mechanical clunks then check your plugs and wires. if it is mechanical plugs, stop running the engine, maybe a broken rod or timing slipped or something

yea I know it's not a good technical term...but it's is a loud banging or knocking sound.

I don't run the engine. I have only ran it to move it from one spot to another and then when someone was going to buy it he wanted to hear it other then that it's just sat there.


If its slipped timing would the engine be shot or repairable? or is both possible?

you could test your plugs and wires but i think you have more wrong then that. but that would be something cheap to start with before you tear the engine apart.

if you slipped timming it won't hurt it or bend any vavles, its a non interference motor... so if it did slip all u would have to do is time it correctly and it will run normal again, but thats just if thats the prob...

Pull the valve cover off and count parts, make sure nobodys gotten left behind.
Broken rocker arms twice in three years
Thats prbly not it, but for the time itll take to pull the two bolts you might as well check
