My good buddy is in the process of building up his N/A 420A? 96 Eclipse. I'll list the parts in a sec. I'm mostly a honda guy, but know my fair share about all cars. Anyway, with his setup I told him he would be lucky to break 200 whp. He thinks much higher, like a minimum of 250whp. His setup is below

Bored .020 over.
Weisco 12.5 to 1 Pistons
Eagle H-beam Rods
Honed Intake Manifold
60 mm Throttle Body (I think is too small)
2.4 Liter Cams
Titanium Springs and retainers
Massive porting on the Intake side of the head, mild on the exhaust side
Pacesetter header (just to start, I say its a waste)
2.25" Cat-back
Still uncertain about injectors
Stock ECU (I told him Stand-alone, or atleast an S-AFC and some dyno time at the least)
O-Ringed Block
ARP Studs and bolts

What do some of the guru's think?

EDIT: We have 93 octane here. But he plans to run a race mix on the street, and 116 to put down the numbers.
 
With the setup u listed above (minus the 2.4 liter cams since they wont work) he would be looking at about 140-150 at the wheels)

2.4 Liter cams dont work in the eclipse's 420a. Neon cams dont work either. He is gonna need Crane 18s for the Eclipse 420a. he is also going to need more displacement - 2.2 stroker kit. 2.5" catback maybe even a 3". Stock ECU? yeah right. He will need AFX ECU for higher revs and aggressive ignition timing and a SAFC to stable the idle. Scrap the Pacesetter header and get an OBX header and testpipe.

Thanks, I know nothing about the 2.4L cams. He bought the head from a friend with all the work done. So I'll find out exactly what cams he is using. I told him 3" for the exhaust as well. And ditto on the ECU. I'll be suprised if it will even run with the stocker.
 
He wants to do something differnt. And he plans on running a huge shot of Nitrous.
 
he needs to get the afx-udp. that's the best starter mod. 60mm tb is the biggest they make for the 420a. don't port the head more than a gasket match. make sure he doesn't smooth out the intake side out too much either, otherwise the fuel won't mix properly. i made that mistake already. don't get more than a 2.5 exhaust unless he's going turbo. you'll actually lose torque. don't get the tb unless he gets cams also, same thing, loss of torque. i heard the pacesetter header is crap. buy a used greddy one instead. my 2 cents...trust :laser:

are you sure they are not 2.4 liter dodge cams? srt-4 is 2.4L as well as many other 420a engines... correct me if i'm wrong
 
Stock ECU will work.

The AF/X ECU will not work on his car. It is only for the 97 models at the moment.

2.5" is ideal for this setup. Even though it is a 2.2l, it isn't equipped with FI (Forced Induction). So, no need for the 3" unless he is going turbo.

Since he is planning on running a "HUGE" shot of nitrous, it will be neccessary to run a MSD unit (Can't remember specific unit's name). You can program it to run advanced when not spraying and have it retard when you are.

The header situation, remember, you get what you pay for.

Explain in detail how you would stabilize the idle with the S-AFC?

Since there are members on this board who have the 2.2l stroker with a turbo kit with absolutely no idle problems.

A mix of race gas and 93 for daily driving. He has an MSD Ignition Retard unit already.

I believe the cams are from a stratus. And why does everyone keep recommending Pulleys. It's not going to be the breaking point on this car. Jeebus.
 
im not sure if those cams will work, what about cam gears? also i think a 2.5 inch exhaust will benefit more with a test pipe. i think an S-AFC will benefit, but a stock ECU should work ok, youre not really making huge changes, an RS is only 140 hp stock and ur going to 200 or in that range, so its not that big of a change. id guess a 180-185 maybe hp not 200, if youre doing all that, might as well throw in a 50 nitrous shot

Its not "pullies" its just one pulley, the UDP from AF/X. You will notice a significant gain just from the UDP.
