I noticed this after a pretty hard launch the other night. When I'm in gear and driving and the clutch is all the way out, around 2100 rpms when I let of the throttle i hear this and when I get back on the the throttle a little I hear a whistle noise from under the car. I know my TO bearing has been on its way out but this is not the same noise. Could this be something that resulted from not changing the TO bearing, I have known that it has been needed to be changed but I was trying to save some money for a whole new clutch. Anyways does this sound likea clutch or possibly a tranny problem, xfer case? Thank you in advance.

Whines and excessive noise can be caused by incorrect, insufficent or broken down tranny fluid. That'd be a good place to start. Make sure it's Gl4 and there are lots of good synthetics out there to make for smoother shifts - they work.

I had a whine kinda like that and thought it was in the tranny, turned out it was the rear differential and it needed a fluid change.

Its not really a whine type sound though, its kind of like a bearing type sound, if that makes sense, I don't know how else to describe it

Well, it doesn't sound like the clutch or the throwout bearing. That'd only make noise on engagement for the most part.

Have you checked your transfer case fluid lately? Before I had my recall work done mine used to make sounds kind of like that when it'd get too low.

If it is a bearing going south then it'd be next to pretty hard to diagnose without tearing open your tranny, transfer case, and maybe your rear diff.

Anyone else want to chime in?

I had my xfer case checked about 4 months or so ago at good old daytona mitsu<---sarcasm

how about the unput shaft bearing?

Minimum check your transfer case fluid, just take out the side bolt, if fluid doesn't come out, add more.

I suppose it could be the input shaft, but it's not a common failure unless the transfer case has been run dry.
