I have recently purchased an EVO3 16g and after dishing out a little extra for the fuel system it is time to see what else i would need to run this thing efficiently. Would I be fine running the stock intercooler with bigger pipes or would i just need a bigger intercooler and piping all together? what would be the highest boost i could comfortably run on the stock intercooler as well. Any opinions are greatly appreciated!

It's stock upgrade that thing or keep a 14b on it or 16g you might as well . If you are talking about boost or leave it stock

Bigger pipes/FMIC make the turbo have to fill the bigger volume before they can hold the boost you want. For a 16g, stay with stock stuff. Something to think about. Its like blowing up a ballon with a bicycle pump.

so it wont have any heat issues or anything?

The stock side mount intercooler heat soaks quickly in summer heat just with spirited city driving. Something that I have been meaning to do with mine is to isolate the air filter from the engine bay heat, and I feel that will help with the SMIC heat soak.

Yes it will be hotter, otherwise none of us will install an fmic. How well it runs etc will be determined by the health of the car, the quality if the tune and what fuel you use.
Please go through some of the resources page. Not a personal shot but it sounds as if you don't have a good understanding of how all this works.

If your car is strictly a street car and you're not planning to max out the 16G the factory intercooler is sufficient but not great. Any turbo car will benefit from an intercooler upgrade that provides reduced intake temps. The biggest issue with the factory unit is that it isn't very large so it will heat soak quickly so it's only effective for short periods of time. Again, on a street car this isn't usually a big deal, but if you live in a warm place or you are doing multiple pulls you're going to see reduced performance.

If you have a way to measure knock, then you will quickly realize that stock intercooler with evo 3 is not a good match. Will it work, sure. I drove like that for many years but it knocked on WOT. You won't be able to run high boost with stock intercooler. FMIC lower my knock a lot. Now granted I was 20 psi on stock intercooler and now I am at 30 psi. No knock or at least it is not registering. Just my .02

I tried to find some forum posts about what intercoolers people have ran for side mount and couldn’t find anything very good for a 16g. The only option I saw was a Supra side mount so I asked here if I could run the stock one.

Aftermarket side mounts are long gone. FMICs got so much cheaper nobody made a side mount anymore.

If it helps anyone, I heatsoaked the OEM sidemount intercooler on nothing but a 14B and Dejon hard UICPs. It was like 20lbs too, nothing crazy. Back to back pulls resulted in the car actually physically bogging down because of knock being so bad.

If you're gonna go with a 16G at 15+lbs, invest in a FMIC and paint it black if you don't want it to be seen.

No more supra intercoolers like back in the day find a 200 dollar one and bolt it up, and you'll be fine. Run that 16, that's how I started SMIC, Evo 16g, GM MAF translator. Then every thing changed over time .

Thats interesting to know i may just go with a FMIC I really just wanted that sleeper look, is it worth it to get the MAF translator over using the stock Karmen vortex though?

No. There are much better ways. Karman is fine for what you're doing.

I suppose I will add my .02 cents again. I recently switched to speed density and before I was using 2g MAS. I did not do much to the tune when I converted and the car drives good, for the most part. The thing is, on 2g MAS it drove great. So, don't be so tempted to venture off from Mitsubishi mass air flow meter. If I would of known, I would of switched to Evo MAS and be done with it.

Honestly, people don't even know what DSMs are anymore and even if they do know, they think they're just some unreliable loser car that doesn't run good. Don't read too much into it. Get a FMIC and be done with it.

As I said above, paint it black if you want to hide it. There have been tests done that show the cooling properties of an intercooler actually work better when painted black. Others have shown there is no difference. The thing they all agree on though, it doesn't hurt performance in the least. Use black radiator paint.

There is always water/air intercoolers.

Or adding a water or methanol injection system on top of the stock stuff. Both are affordable and viable solutions to keep it unassuming.
