Ok so I just had my tranny rebuilt and got a new output shaft because the splines were all stripped/worn away.

My question is, what is the thing in the transfer case called that the output shaft goes into? And where should I get one...look for a used one or new from Mitsu? How hard is it to install?

Oh and one more thing. There was a ton of rusty dust in there. Would this indicate that the seal is bad or something?

Thanks.

They aren't exactly stripped I guess, just worn out over time. There was a ton of metal dust in there from the two wearing on each other. There was no lubrication on it apparently.

You'd probably be better off just getting another transfercase. If you must replace the piece the part is called the T/F DRIVE GEAR SHAFT. Part #'s MD734089 for Automatic, MD741189 for Manual. Don't forget you'll need to repace some seals and what not. Make sure you put a good amount of anti-seize on and in the spline's before you bolt it to the trans. Also make sure your rear diff is working properly. Mine was shot and took out the splines on mine. I've also had an e-brake stuck on one side and damaged the diff and transfercase, not to mention the center diff!

Damn that sounds like a mess. So it would be a pretty expensive repair then? I can't afford a new transfer case...should I get this damn thing rebuilt too!?

Take it in for a recall. if its that bad odds are they will just replace it. I just had mine taken in and they totally hooked me up with a brand new one.

Wow they gave you a whole new transfer case? I have a feeling they're going to tell me "yeah it says here you already had the transfer case recall work done. There's nothing we can do"

yeah dealerships dont like to mess with the recall. all it takes is one person to raise some hell and they know that. just dont budge and they will take a look at it. now if they dont do anything about it tell them that you know crap is wrong with it. and then take it somewhere else and dont go back to that dealer.

Note: my transfer case is outside the car right now. I guess I would just bring it to the service desk and show them?
