what is a down pipe,up pipe and a test pipe?

I might be wrong but is a down pipe that pipe that runs from the exaust manafold down to the cat? and what is a up-pipe and test pipe? can I put a Test pipe on my RS? and where could I buy one? where do all of these pipes run? I know total newbie question thankz

The downpipe is the pipe that runs off your manifold, on the turbo DSMs it is the pipe that runs right after the turbo and o2 housing. A test pipe is really a pipe that you run instead of a catalytic converter. So its basically a straight exhaust. I'm not sure what you mean by up-pipe though.

You could put a test pipe on your RS, but it depends on what exhasut diamter you are running. Because you want your exhasut to have a good stream velocity which is the speed at which the exhasut flows in your exhasut system. If you are running a 2.5 sized piping on an RS then I would run a cat instead of a test pipe.

And having a test pipe on your car is not legal by any means because a cat. converter is an emission filter to helps the environment. And it helps you to pass emissions testing so it would be better to have one on. If you have ANY more questions PM me or IM me on AIM and I will help you with as much as I can.

Only place I've heard of an up-pipe is on wrx's. It's the pipe between the exhaust manifold and turbo.

yeah i havent heard many cars having uppipes except for WRXs... so you dont need one... its basically a WRX thing... If you ever heard front pipe... that is just a Downpipe with a strait pipe... I first heard this term from RX7 people... But the Apex'i downpipe would be what they call a front pipe... thats a combo of a strait pipe and a downpipe i guess ^^;;
