can you tell if a car is an auto or a 5spd by the VIN #?

my friend found a talon on auto trader but the seller didn't list what kind of tranny it had. I ran a carfax on it for him, but it didn't say either.

Just call the guy and ask...And yes you can find out from the vin..get the number and call the dealership and ask them to look it up...but it will be easier to call the seller and just ask..

Check the 8th digit of the number. If it's a turbo it will be "F". If it n/a it will be "Y".
