Value of DSMs these days

Picked up my current car for $1000 which was not in running condition when I got it. I have been offered $3500 - $4000 for it on several occasions lately. Needless to say I have more than that in it. But, it's nice to know you're going in the right direction.

I was just wondering what bone stock, never modded examples of our 1g and 2g cars are going for these days. I haven't seen any in the classifieds, and have no idea where to ask. KBB is not going to see any added value in a rare unmolested DSM, so there pricing doesn't really hold any value to me. Thanks in advance

p.s. I have a red 92 AWD TSI, 5-spd., 6bolt/4bolt with tan leather interior, without sunroof, and is 100% completely stock, never modded with 125k miles, perfect compression, and I am the 3rd owner.

The best way to find that out is visiting the dsmtrader.com

As much as it may be a market against dsm sellers, it certainly can be for dsm buyers.

When I bought my '96 Spyder last year, it was entirely stock with only 32k miles on it!! It was practically in new condition, however, thanks to kbb.com, I talked the seller down from $9k to $6500 in only 20 minutes.

So, my advice... if you like DSMs, then just sell yours for whatever you can get and go look for another one like mine.... barely driven and in stock condition, then buy that car worth over $10k for only 6k, and be happy you just got a $4k steal!

That's always the danger in buying any older vehicle is that what you put into it, you'll never get it out (only exception is if it's a collectable and you found that vehicle, like a Duesenberg for example, for a song from an individual who doesn't know what he's got-it's just junk to them, restored it to a near-mint condition and lived off the turnaround value received..), why it's a tough market with our DSM' especially with the 1Ga's that some of us can grab for a song, shove tons of money into it to make it what we want it to be, then find out we'd just better keep it for the duration.

Then, obviously is the worst danger of an accident that totals the vehicle. Only way one can come out is if that accident was a rear ender where the front end powertrain can be parted out.

Like my '90 Ply RS Turbo: all stock outside of having an JDM EVO I motor/turbo in it and tagging it for $1300.00 at a private lot dealership-which this car has been sitting there for a good six months prior..and I already had another DSM, but just the 1.8 variety. How I got a deal is that they say that the motor wasn't in great of shape. True, it was huffing on one cylinder, but figured that the wires were bad (real strong gamble there on my hunch). Got it home and immediately attached that hunch. Took out the plug wires and No.1 sparkplug hole was full of water-probably condensation of sorts-, took a towel, rolled it into a wick to dab up that water til I got the bore dried out. Took the plug out, black as sin from not firing, cleaned it up, reinstalled it and runs like a top.

Right there, I got my deal since he did have $1995.00 marked on the window as the price and figured that 1300 was good enough to get rid of it since it sat so long on the lot, with other lookers thinking it had a bad motor.

Okey, got a deal on the sale but now the 'laundry list' is growing a bit on it of things needed to be done: mounts, body work, front frame touchup, possible fuel pump (just did the t-stat/radiator cap/radiatorflushout thingey on it..), tires..et.al. And knowing that I'll never get my $1.3k out of it on a sale plus what I had to put in it.

Thus, planning on keeping this one - even though I've been hit a few times with offers of a purchase.

KBB and NADA are definitely not our best friends when it comes to stock vehicle value..

About 2 years ago, I bought my 93 TSi AWD for $4k - completely stock down to having the original aircan on the intake. It had 53k miles on it when I bought it, and serves as my daily driver for the summer. Now it has 65k on it, and the only mods are a Dejon intake, and boost / oil pressure gauges. I'm the second owner, as the original was a 55 year old woman!

As far as $$ goes, I've been offered $5,500 but refused because I love my car!

92 awd perfect condition 125*** i would say 2,500-3,500 i just bought a 93 awd 133*** almost mint for 2,900 if this helps any

real world "values" on things, check the "Completed Auctions" on eBay.
Agreed. Last year, someone back in NY had a '90 GSX in showroom condition with less than 26k miles on the clock (it was his wifes and she was done with it).

The car was absolutely in mint condition-Red with black top. No blemishes, kept it covered when not in use in the garage. - just a beauty to behold.

He had the starting bid at $6k with a reserve. On the final day, it reached over $10k and still didn't reach the reserve.

Course, he also had the original OEM factory description and price sheet in which showed the vehicle being over $20k new, in which I think he was pushing for this price being of the new condition that it was in.

I paid 2700 for my red tsi awd, bone stock except the "cold air sock", BCS restrictor removed, and silencer removed. It had 145k on it, lots of freeway miles from the 1st owner. The 2nd owner who i bought it from just let it sit. The air filter turned into dust when i poked it, needed brakes, engine needed rebuild had some boost leaks, turbo was on the way out the door, knock sensor was gone, needed carrier bearings, tires ,etc.

Pretty much I revived this almost stock 1g. I offered the guy at first 1200 and he laughed he said he knows he can get way more for a 6bolt/4 bolt Talon. Read up a little and called him back with my offer. And this guy wasn't joking, he had a turbo on every machine in his yard and specialized in making turbocharged snowmobiles running 9 second passes. When i picked up the car they were plumbing nitrous into the intercooler.:sneaky:

Long story short I believe I paid maybe a little too much, but how many four cylinder 1992 cars do you see that A) are in excellent condition from their owners taking exceptional car of them(there are a few). and B) Can leave a 2008 car in the dust?

BTW Wisconsin finally passed the no more OBD1 emissions testing!:rocks:

I believe a local bought that car recently this past summer. A kid came to the AMS open house/grand opening with a red 1990 GSX with 26,000 miles on it. The car looked BRAND NEW! Engine bay was spotless and 100% original. Interior was perfect.

Some guy was selling a 90 or 91 Talon with 32k miles on the clock at the Shootout this year. Interior was perfect. Engine bay was very clean, but not as clean at the 26k mile GSX. The car did have some mods done to it. He was "asking" $10k.

The guy I bought mine from in 2005 was asking $11,000 and that's what I paid. But I would have paid just about anything LOL. That was the KBB value for excellent at the time too. It's a '99 and had around 49k miles, excellent condition aside from a couple chips on the driver's fender, black leather, manual, and stock aside from a Greddy air filter. I searched for the damn thing every day for over two years and when I finally found it I jumped on it. Had to go 2 states away to find it too. KBB says it's worth $8,600-9,200 now. :dsm:

I have the original build sheet for mine and it came out to be $22,xxx when it was new.

... and this was in 1993 dollars. Then, on top of it would be the dealer markup of another 2 grand.

I'd bet that the same GSX would be over $35k now if it was still in production. But that's where the new EVO X comes into play.

In 1993 the CPI was 144.5 and today its 219.964. That makes the $22,000 then the same as $33,489 now. Hey this is good news. If you count inflation then all of the mods to my Talon are less then the original cost. Ok I'll work on that for a while.

However you hack it the Talon is an AWD sports coupe with 400 BHP and the mods cost less than a Korean made sedan. But like any thing it is only worth what someone will pay. The problem with DSM's is that people who most want the car don't have cash to cover a good set of mods, and any sane banker will balk about loaning $15K to $20K for a ten year old car.

I just paid $1900 for my '90. It wasn't stock and has a blown had gasket, but it has the checkered interior and blue exterior that I've been wanting again for years so... to me it was worth it.

I paid 5500$ for a bone stock 95 TSi AWD (saftied, certified and all paperwork done)
I found it on Autotrader the day it came out.
It had 205,000km (about 120,000m) but the body was almost perfect (original paint), so I tought, I'll buy a motor when this one dies.

I had the car for about 2 years now (227,000km) added few basic mods and the engine still runs like new.
(only thing that broke so far was fr, pass. axle)
I think I got a good deal.:talon:

I paid 2,500 for my 95 gsx in 04, 99k miles on it. looked brand new and was completely stock except the sprint springs. thought i was getting a good deal. took it out test drove it, seemed like it ran fine. came back the next day paid for it signed the title, drove it out of the guys yard with a huge puff of smoke. so after b****ing up a storm he wouldnt budge saying i must have done something between his driveway and the street, a whole 20 feet. got it home and the turbo was leaking like a siv, found a new turbo for a few hundred bucks, replaced it at home. started the car and found out the motor was dead, the oil was full of metal shavings. paid another 2500 for a rebuilt one. started pulling my motor and figured we would take a look at the tranny. yea, go figure, not only was the clutch shot the gears were not looking to hot. turns out after the guy found someone to buy it he let his nephew take it out for a spin. and he let him tear it up. so if you buy from a private seller, just double check before you fork over the cash. 2500 quickly turned into almost 8k. and later that year the guys nephew even broke the windows out of the car. never even met the kid, cop was driving buy and actually caught him doing it. but i never saw any compensation. 300 for a front window, 1800 for the rear, spoiler was busted in half, mirrors were gone:beatentodeath:. anyways my point is a good deal can turn into 1 hell of a bad time.

I bought my 95 talon for around 8 grand. It had a recent build list of 6 grand. The buyer had to sell and I had cash so I got a good deal. This was two years ago.

Getting a good deal is being in the right spot at the right time. Keep your eyes and ears open
