Urrrr - Second AC/PS Belt to break

Mine broke on me twice. I took it to the same place that installed after the first break, and they said that there was a washer or spacer missing so they added a new one and everything has been fine to the past 2+years. Its something small but may be worth checking into.

Mine also breaks every year or two. I was told from a mechanic that it breaks because I pull the rpms up too high. I don't know how that relates to the powersteering AC belt.
How do i replace this belt myself? Is it just a take off broken belt and put on new belt situation or do things need to be proberly tuned after the new belt is placed on?

just pull off what's left of the old and put on the new, not much else you can do..make sure you get a decent belt and adjust the tension after you have driven it a little bit. The new belt will stretch some and become loose.

just below the a/c compressor there is a pully. As you are facing the engine loosen the nut on the side of the pully..this will allow it to move in the track. Next, you will need to turn the bolt that is facing the front..just below and to the right of the pully..this is the adjustment bolt. After you get the new belt to the correct tension dont forget to tighten the pully itself(the nut on the side) or it will slip loose.

HA 90 miles with out power steering I laugh at you (JK) I have gone alot longer unfortunaly :( my car is leaking from the power steering rack!!! its the high pressure line on the drivers side...... what a load of crap...its all good gonna change that out and get some new axels yeh!!!!

I throw my ps/ac belt everytime I hit 6k. Most of the time it just comes off and I put it back on a few miles later , but a couple time the belt has been eaten by the crank pulley monster. I have bought the most expensive belts I can find and they still jump off.

I recently replaced the head gasket and put on the underdrive crank pulley. Everything lines up great , the the SOB still jumps off. Where exactly is this spacer your talking about that you were missing? Was it on the tensioner?

to you^^^^....definitely sounds like the tensioner..... have you checked the play lately. also your pully may be slightly bent

Go with the goodyear gatorback belts they are the best. As for it flying off on you, something is wrong with a pulley somewhere. One is missaligned, wabbleing or something. Some of those pulley bearings go bad after a while.

Mine did the same damn thing...then again, I was peggin the rev limiter then a loud ass pop happened. Popped the hood and the belt was laying across the VC. Never really appreciated power steering til' I lost it. Pain trying to make U-turns...Got a belt from the dealer and everything's good...

Hey Kirby...

Where do you find the gatorbacks at anyways?

there is a slight wobble on the tensioner pulley , but that thing is 100 bucks from the dealer.

Ive used the Dayco and the Kelly. The kelly seems to hold on longer than the dayco. Of course both of them stay on as long as I dont get anywhere near red line.

went through this for a while... and don't ask me why the stock belt worked great for the first however many years but what i was told is that the stock pully is not adequate (not wide enough)... that you have to get an updated one. and you also have to get a new mounting bracket for the compressor. i went ahead and got the pully and its wider than the original one but i have yet to replace the mounting bracket. unfortunately the pully i got has a messed up bearing or something because it wobbles - i've thrown two belts since i put it on. not happy. specially since satan wants like 180 or something stupid for a new one and the one i got wasn't put in by them so they refuse to replace it.

So does anyone have any part numbers handy for the belts suggested to use with the underdrive crank pullies?

The dayco has a one year free replacement on it , Im on my third free belt. ADV is not happy with me.
