I made the decision to upgrade my lathe from the southbend 10 inch I had as they are generally very basic. I found this locally and jumped on it. This particular model was made in 1988 , it’s a 13 inch x40 gear headed lathe with a 3hp 3phase motor. I can do metric and standard threading and it has auto feed. Getting it into my garage was terrifying as it weighs 1700 lbs. I still need to find myself a nice bridgeport .... Soon hopefully

Nice find. I got a 14X50 LeBlonde gear head in my shop. Used to have a south bend heavy 10. South bends are good lathes but man does that belt change get annoying. Especially if you use it a lot. You can never go back once you run one of these gear heads. Do you have 3 phase in your garage or are you running a VFD or rotary phase converter?

I have a 10hp American rotary phase convertor, I made the mistake of running a static convertor on my southbend. What a pile of shit

Good stuff! My geared head lathe is about the same size.

Something to consider for a shop without 3-phase; A replacement 1-phase motor is often cheaper than a good phase converter. Especially for these lower HP motors.
I was going crazy with my southbend 10 , it had an old Pre nema 65 frame motor which they don’t make anymore , if u want one they Are stupid expensive in single phase. My new lathe has a 3 hp 3 phase.... I love 3 phase motors, so smooth
