Hope you guys have some time
I finally had some time to give you a complete description of this:
Following winning this contest, I started my communication with Extreme Turbo in early January, they told me right a way that they do not have any GT turbos at that moment and will not have any for a while. Instead, they offered to me their ETE52, which they could ship right a way.
My initial thought, was: Hey, I can just take that turbo, sell it and then buy a GT turbo that rally wanted. But I also knew that this wouldnt be right, it is certainly not what the contest was all about.
So instead, I politely declined their offer, saying that I ran a turbo slightly larger than ETE52 last year. That is when ET started their search for a GT turbo to give me. Unfortunately, they were not successful at finding the turbo that I wanted.
Here is the basic problem: This contest was set-up by the original DSM Performance and Extreme Turbo (and fabrications) more than a year ago. Since then, ATR bought out this business but kept the name of Extreme Turbo and DSM Performance. These are NOT the same people who started the contest. However, they decided to go ahead with the contest last November/December, IMHO not fully understanding what it entailed
They had no GT turbos and no apparent desire to sponsor a DSM. But here I was, a winner of their GT turbo and their 12 month sponsorship
So far, this does not speak well of ET
Clearly, there was a miscommunication on their part, which allowed this contest to proceed under its original terms. That is one of those things that just happens, every business can make a mistake. What separates a good business from a bad business is how they handle their mistakes. Well, ATR/ET stuck to their shops word to provide me a turbo, it is not a GT Turbo, as was originally promised, but these are not the original people who made the promise.
I ended up with a new, fully loaded ETE52 turbo with an install kit. Total value of this package is around $1600. Or about as much as what most other shops charge for a basic GT turbo. So as far as I am concerned, they did fine by me and they have been very accommodating though out this process. I would like to thank Sherry, Andrea and George at Extreme Turbo for their very professional handling of this contest despite less than ideal circumstances! You really have to applaud their commitment to seeing this through and not falling back on an excuse that this was all set-up by previous owners and trying to walk away.
So there is no sponsorship, I just get the turbo with which I can do what I whish. That is fine with me as I have just about everything I could want for the car anyway.
But here is my next problem, what am I going to do with this turbo?
It is:
-smaller than the T3/T4 60-1 turbo that I ran last year and roughly the same as Frank5 that I also ran last year
-not a GT series
-Does not have ball bearings
On top of it all, I am no longer required to install it for a dyno run and a ¼ mile pass as was specified in the original contest outline.
After carefully weighing all of my options, I decided to sell it and buy a turbo that I originally wanted: a GT series ball bearing turbo I sort of feel like a jerk for doing this, but I really see no point in trying out this turbo at this time.
I would like to thank everyone who has voted for me in this contest and want to assure you that I am going to end up with a GT series style turbo that most of you wanted to see me run.
Thanks!
