Hi, i am trying to make my 1g n/t as fast as possible. i put on an injen intake already and i was thinkin about puttin turbo cams in it. I want to know how much horse it will get me and if this is a good mod. Also how hard is the install and stuff? thanx

well unless you have the 4g63 motor the cams wont fit. 2ndly those cams were designed for the turbo and since you dont have one i doubt that they will perform the way that your are expecting them to.

actually, you will pick up some power, the exhaust cam is the only one that is different though, but its a good idea to use a matched set. it'll also give you a bit more of a lope in the idle, sounds good even on stock exhaust,or so i thought so,this is due to the exhaust cam having .011" more lift.

Just make sure you dont get cams from a '90 4g63 or an auto and you'll definitely see a gain.

You MIGHT see a couple of hp but the power band is supposedly enlarged/flattened slightly b/c of the cams. Look at it this way, the cams are like 40-50 bucks. If you get 5hp, that is a nice upgrade. Assuming you do the install yourself, its a nice upgrade.

I'd definitely say more than 5hp... maybe in the midrange you'd gain 5 hp, but one guy said he gained about 17whp @ 6200rpms.

17whp is BS, unless you get some real performance cams, I'd say on a guess you may gain 7-8 crank HP from the turbo exhaust cam(assuming you have a NT DOHC 4g63 that is a manual), which is great for the cost, you can find turbo cams, a set of them for 40-50 dollars...as far as the install goes....its going to be a pain in the ass, since you have to remove the t-belt to do it....though I once did see an article where they were working on a DOHC honda and used clips to fasten the t-belt to the cam gears, then used bungee cords to maintain the tension of the t-belt by hooking them through the cam gears then disconnecting the cam gears from the cams(they did all this to replace the head with a gude head without having to redo the timing belt, but I dont see why it wouldnt work to replace the cams....but its still a PITA)and to tell the truth I'm not sure I would trust that way, because if the belt slips even one tooth, you can kiss your valves goodbye, so just do the upgrade next time you do your timing belt

hey guys,,,i have an automatic 92 talon,,,what kind of high performance cams would fit in my 4g63 engine?...would a turbo cams from the same year fit?...thanx.

ok i have a 92 eclipse 2.0 5 speed so i'm pretty sure its a 4g63. And the cams are from a 93 gsx so i think they will fit. So how hard is the install gonna be now??? Whats the deal with the timing belt, do i have to like get it in the same spot that it came off at or somthing????

Anything that will fit a 1G 2.0 will fit your car.

And yes turbo cams will fit.

Yep, 4G63. And yep, those cams will fit.

Why not just bolt on the 14B and run like 9 PSI? That will be damn near 100 HP with proper fule and tuning. You can get the entire kit for about $400, just don't use the stock SMIC, get a supra one. Isn't the NT 4G63 the same but with higher compression? Just do that, it'll be a good project and relatively cheap. Plus the higher compression ration will spool the turbo pretty fast, and 9psi would be safe with fuel, go for it.

The nt 4G63 is the same as the turbo except 9:1 CR(turbo is 7.8:1) and the nt doesn't have oil squirters in the block. Those are both easy to get around though. It can be done, but its a lot of work.

A lot of work? Everything botls right on? That hardest part would be turning a couple of wrenches.

Get a 2G exhaust manifold
MKIV SMIC
a 14B or 16G turbo
a 2G mass
a 1G BOV
Nice aftermarket Turbo Intake with boost return line
Custom intercooler piping, not that hard
boost gauge
boost controller

ok Maybe a lil more then $400

obviously you have'nt done this job, because it not as easy as "turning a couple of wrenches".

9psi will kill the non-turbo pistons. You would need to change the pistons. The piston rings sit to close to the top to use much forced induction.

7psi would be safer, but I'd still reccommend you change the pistons.

Using a torque wrench is always a good idea. It's not as critical on the exterior bolt-ons but if you're messing around in your cylinder head you'd be inviting problems not using one. Incorrect torque on the cam cap bolts and such could cause serious damage. Just do yourself a favor and rent one from the local auto parts store.

Swapping cams really isn't all that difficult. True, you have to redo your timing belt but if you've got a friend to help it's not a big deal. It's time consuming indeed, but not really difficult if you're somewhat mechanically inclined. I've done my timing belt 6 times already because I keep changing things inside the engine! :p Three of those times I did it alone. It's 10x easier than doing the t-belt on the 420a, I can vouch for that!

With that said, who cares which cam it is that makes the power? Just swap 'em both in! You're already in there... ;)

As far as the turbo install, there's more to it than just bolt ons. It's easy to amass parts and bolt 'em on, but it's the tuning that is the hard part. Of all of it, it's getting the right amount of fuel at the right time that is the issue.
