I'm looking to finish off the air flow portion of my parts list and I was planning on porting the 02 housing, exhaust mani and intake mani. But someone suggested that I instead go with a "tuned length header," that was a couple weeks ago and I still can't find out what exactly that means. I did see something that suggested that this is a completely custom exhaust mani. made after multiple dyno's to offer the best performance with the current setup. But all that is just my guess off of one simple sentence I read somewhere. Tuned length, isn't just another name for equal length is it?

you can get tuned intake manifolds as well. What it does is gives you extra added power within a small power range. I'll use the example of a tuned intake as its easiest for me to explain. You can then apply it to the exhaust manifold. As the air is being sucked into the head through the intake mani, the valves will of course close on the combustion stroke or whatever. Anway, when they close ther air just kinda runs into a wall and a pulse is sent back up the runner. This pulse will go up the runner and bounce off the back of the intake mani. It will continue to bounce back and forth until the valves open back up. When you tune the manifold that means you make the runners a particular lenght so the pulse is on its way back and entering the valve just when it opens and therefore boosting the runner velocity. Now there is a mathematical equation to figure out the length of the runners, the number of bounces and the rpm range you want this to work in but i can't remember it off hand. Its really not all that complicated if i remember correctly though. In the end its not really worth it unless you have your car perfectly tuned. You will notice a performance gain even if it isn't, but it works best when it is. I hope that explanation makes some sense. I know not everything is worded all that well but i just woke up and i'm kind of in a hurry to get something to eat. :thumb: :dsm:
