'94 AWD 5-speed w/'90 Transmission. Axle Seal. Passenger Side.

I've went through two OEM seals, and one Autozone seal. I've tried tapping it ALL THE WAY in, and I've tried tapping it until it's flush with the case. I don't know how much is leaks while driving but leaves at least several drops everywhere I park. On the most recent install, I hoped maybe I just overfilled the transmission - but its passed that point.

Any thoughts/solutions ??

Over filling the transmission will cause it to leak. Have you checked the fluid level with the car sitting on a level surface?

I had this problem on my 97 and have been through 4 seals on both sides. Yesterday I installed new ones and this time I only tapped the seals in about 85% of the way and that solved my problem. If the surface on the axle shaft is good then you probably just need to have them stick out a little farther out of the transmission.

Good luck, I know how frustrating those little 5 dollar seals can be!

I went through this as well. I went through 6 seals.

You are putting them in too far. The little lip should be outside the case surface if that makes sense.

A little grey rtv around the edge will help as well.

Hope this helps.

The Autozone seals don't have the little lip. The RTV sounds like a good idea. Its very hard to not rip the rubber somewhat while installing - no matter how much you circulate the hammer while tapping.

The RTV lubes it a bit.

You should be using a 36mm socket to drive the seals in. Makes it much easier.

Yeah i had the same problem as well, went through 3 seals though... just have to leave a little bit of the seal out. Extremely frustrating if you ask me haha... and it isnt convenient everytime to get it done.. oh well.. hope you have it figured out!
