Im in the market for a new tranny, i have a few questions...

1) where can i buy one at...either online or in bay area(california)
2) i have a 1990 gsx is tehre a way to tell what transfer case i have
3) Are the transfer cases interchangable meaning can i use my transfer case wiht a different tranny that had a different transfer case
4) I basically need a new bell housing only is there an easy way to swap that without needing to buy a whole new tranny or is it buy a new tranny time
5) theresa place that was trying to sell one iwth a 6month warrany around here for $650 i thought that was way to high...whats the usual going price for one

Thanks

If the transfer case is all aluminum, it is a 22 spline, if not it is a 23 spline. You will probally have a 22 spline. You can take a tranny out of a 91-94, but you will have to change out the output shaft to match the 22 spline transfer case, or buy a 23 spline tranfer case to go with it. The 90 transmission is weaker, and costs more to get it up to par with the 91-94 tranny's, unless you are lucky enough to have one with the laser input shaft. (you can't tell until you take the tranny out.) You could just change out the housing, but depending on the car's mileage, it might be in your best interests to rebuild it while it is out of the car. 650 is not a bad price, not bad at all. You can spend thousands on a built tranny....even a mitsubishi replacement is over 2000.00. Check out shepracing.com. John is great to work with, and he can help you out.

So your saying if i go with a newer year (91-94)tranny i will have to change my axles out? Basically a 90 car came with the 22 spline(which is weaker) and the newer ones came with a 23 spline...am i reading what you wrote correctly? I think im just going to get a whole new(used but new to me) tranny just for fun also  Thanks for your input....

if you go with a 91-94 tranny, you will not have to change the axles, just the transfer case. The 22 spline transfer case is not really the weak point in the 90, it is more in the tranny itself......If you were going to get something used, i would get a 91-94 wit the 23 spline transfer case.(the 92.5 and up were best, but you can not tell when the tranny was made until you have it apart) Even if you end up using the 22 spline on a built up 90 tranny you will be okay. However, this is not the most cost effective method because it costs about 500.00 bones to get the 90 up to par with the 91-94. The only reason that i went that route is because i got a sweet deal on a 90 race tranny.......

Ok i get what your saying now...Thanks for your help, :thumb: My ultimate goal is a 93-94 tranny and then just put on my transfer case...but any 91 up is better than a 90...Sounds good to me...is there any way to tell the difference between them, rather than just asking the people that work there becuase useually people dont always know and just amke it up to make the customer happy...Thanks...

There is no way to know the manufacture date without tearing into the tranny. And the year of the car is not always the same as the manufacture date of many of its parts......get a 91-94 tranny and transfer case and you are set!!!
