I was reading on how to test the rear LSD in the Factory service manual and found it very confusing. Can someone help me understand how to make sure everything is working properly? I was trying to pull a scrap car out of a root today and heard a loud clunking from the rear end. I just want to be pre cautious. I think it could have been my exhaust clunking. Am I stupid for thinking it would be a good idea to put my AWD to use by pulling that car out?

you can jack the car up and have all four wheels off the floor and have someone run the car in 1st gear.... If all four wheels spin at the same time, then your lsd is working....thats the the easiest way to check in my opinion....

LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIAL CHECK
(1) Block the front wheels and move the shift lever to neutral.
(2) Completely release the parking brake.
(3) Jack up the rear wheels and place a rigid rack at the
specified part of the side sill.
(4) Disconnect the coupling of the differential and propeller
shaft.
(5) When one wheel is slowly rotated, check whether or not
the wheel on the other side turns in the same direction.
(6) If it turns in the opposite direction, replace the viscous unit.

In step (5) if the opposite side wheel turns the same direction as the wheel you are turning then the differential is open.

In step (5) if the opposite side wheel turns the same direction as the wheel you are turning then the differential is open.
Other way around. If it turns in the OPPOSITE direction it's open. If both wheels turn forward then it's an LSD. If you turn one forward and the other goes in reverse then it's open.

Right you are. My opposite words were opposite the quoted directions about opposite direction:coy:.
At least the quote was right.
