ok so i just this 91 gsx.... has some miner problems but its the only dsm i could find where i live (alaska) so i get it.... firstttttt thing i notice when driving it is i cant put into 1st unless im at a dead stop or it girnds like crazy...... and shiting into 2nd and some times 3rd it grinds/clunks...... but after driving it a few days i can now down shift into 1st if i do it slowly unlike earlyer when i HAD to be at a dead stop. i asked a friend and he toldme it could be that the clutch needs to be adjusted... and guy sold it to it to me said it was the syncros........ so i really dont know what to do but its really annoying LOL

thanx

First of all, there's really no need to "downshift" into first. Only use it while taking off. Generally first is difficult to get into at any time, when rolling at 0-5 mph it's much easier, anything over that should be hard. The other gears grinding lead me to believe it's time to rebuild the transmission. Do they grind no matter how you shift? Or if you baby it into gear will it go in quietly? If that's the situation...Synchros.

Depending on how many miles are on it, this could be a great time to replace/upgrade the clutch, depending on what your goals for the car are.

no no matter how much i baby it. it still cluncks or grinds when shifting... rebuild is probly needed but i have ether essuies that need tobe delt withbefor the tranny... i was just hoping it might just needed adjuested but guess not LOL

thanx

Yes, agreed that you should only put it into first at a dead stop, or a very slow creep.

Where does your clutch engage at? Does it feel normal? Also, make sure you are pushing it all the way to the floor, if you wear big/wide shoes this can be a problem. Also look to see if the floormat is in the way. Is your master cylinder or slave in good condition?

^ I'm curious to know where the clutch petal engages also. It should engage about half-way off of the floor. Many people think that engaging right off of the floor is the way aftermarket clutches should feel, but in reality it is just putting excessive wear on your transmission as your clutch isn't disengaging 100% during shifts.
