Switching from a 1G knock sensor to a 2G knock senso

Is there any advantage.

I have one sitting in the Garage and wondering if it's worth it.
 
Over on the AEM board, users have noticed that the 1G sensor is notoriously lazy and not real sensitive to noise/knock/other sounds. This is a problem when running the AEM because it doesn't always pick up stuff you might be interested in and can tune out with an offset. Also limits the amount of advance you can run because you are not quite sure what is going on.

The 2G is reported to be much more sensitive and would probably drive the 1G ECU crazy, pulling timing left and right. If you are going standalone, I would say yes. If you are on the stock ECU, I'd say no.

Well, I suppose it could be. If you have more control over all aspects of your engine and determining how aggressive you can be with timing depends on what you can hear, would it be beneficial to listen with a naked ear or with ear muffs on? I would rather see EVERYTHING and subtract out what I need with the AEM--set the threshhold--than just be ignorant to it.
 
With an AEM I could see wanting to use a 2G knock sensor only because you have control over what you want to do with that noise. with a stock ECU a 1G knock sensor sounds like a much better idea :)

I wonder why I never thought of swapping to a 1st gen knock sensor to try and reduce my knock count.
 
That's kinda funny Larry because I was thinking the other way.

Something that more sensitive may save engine.

But at the cost of power!
 
Its better then just grounding your knock sensor to see what power can be made :)

Seriously though if you run with a standalone like the Haltech you dont even use a knock sensor so who knows.
 
After I get this thing tuned right in the spring?
I might try that on the Dyno to see what happen.
Just to see if the better timing will do?
Will get everyone posted when that happens.
