Hi all,

Has this been done? And if so can you use the 420a head? Are the mounting points the same? Will the transmission bolt up? And if this is a possible swap, What are the advantages and disadvantages to this?

I have a real nice 95 Eclipse with a blown 420a. It's an automatic I just picked up and can't find a 420a for under 1500.00 where as the 2.4 Sebring/Strattus engine goes for 400 bucks.

Thanks, Bob

I would go to www.2gnt.com and start from there.
All of thoes questions have been asked and answerd.

Edit but here are the answers anyway LOL:
1. yes
2. yes
3. need to modify the passanger side mount
4 yes
5 more torque, more horsepower, less rpm range though. a plus, srt4 internals for $60(ish) per rod+piston

Yes, it has.

Yes, it is. I think everyone who's done this swap has used the 2.0L 420A head. Using the 2.0L head helps convert that low-end torque the stock 2.4L was built for into something more usable for a light, FWD car: mid-range torque.

Just a note on nomenclature... both the 2.4L and 2.0L are "420A"s, so it's best not to refer to one as the "420A" and the other as the "2.4L" in order to avoid confusion.

The transmission will bolt up just fine. Given that three of the four motor mounts in our cars attach to the transmission rather than the block itself, you really only need to concern yourself with that one mount that attaches to the block.

For that mount (the passenger's side mount), you'll need to fabricate a solution. Stock mounts are hard to work with since their aluminum. I've heard of people having success with 1G DSM mounts, though, since they're steel, and easier to weld.

Yes, it's a possible swap, but you'll need to do some more research to answer that other question.

Well there you go... sounds like you got yourself a solution. Like WMD suggested, though, read up on 2GNT. This project isn't something to just jump into. There's quite a few things you need to be made aware of so you don't run into any problems.

Sounds pretty straight forward to me. I'm going to look for a low mileage 2.4 tomorrow.

Thank You both and I'm sure I'll be asking more questions.

In addition to the fabrication you will need to alter the wiring and cam timing to compensate for th differnt firing order the 420a 2.4 has. That is where many people have issues because if its off a hair, it wont fire.

I actually think I'm going to postpone this project. I just bought this Eclipse and it was advertised as having a blown and seized engine. Well I put a set of jumpers on it and hit the key about a dozen times and it started to crank. So I checked the oil which was empty. I then added a couple of quarts and cranked it over. It sputtered a few times then started. I looked underneath to find oil spewing everywhere from a hole in the oil filter. So I shut it off and found a Jeep 4.0 oil filter with the same threads. (it's just temporary) Well I screwed it on and topped off the oil and put 2 gallons of fresh fuel in it and it fired right up. I drove it to the gas station and home and it ran great.

So I'd be a fool to rip apart an engine with 62,000 miles on it. Instead I'm going to enduro it. LOL

I will at a later date attempt that project.:dsm: :laser: :talon:

Thanks, Bob
