I know there is a thread for the "common" questions about mufflers, but it was geared towards the "loudest" muffler. I having my buddy build a 3" cat-back system for me and want to pick out a "relatively" inexpensive muffler that has a deep sound but isn't going to piss off the police too much. I wanna be loud, but I don't wanna go deaf while driving. Any suggestions? I've heard good thigns about Apexi, and some mixed about magnaflow....what do you guys think? It's for a 2G Talon TSi AWD. :talon:

I just bought a magnaflow 4" in 4" out muffler. Haven't built my exhaust yet so I don't know how it sounds.

I would buy an Edelbrock RPM series 5525. Its a sleeper muffler, more so than the Magnaflow, and its ssooo deep and smooth. Do a google on the Edelbrock, if you put one on your car, you'd be very impressed, and its not mainstream.

magnaflow is the way to go!!!

get a 3"megan n1 style on ebay ( $10 to $20 ) its cheaper plus it has a silencer and looks better. ill post pic for you as soon as i take one..

Magnaflow hands down if you get the right one. About $110. for a SS model. I use an oval, 5"x8"x18" body which helps Quiet it down some along with a resonator in the "B"pipe. Mine is 3" in and dual 3" out. Different. Mine is model #14298. Jegs sells magnaflow and could get you #14221 which I believe is 3" in and dual 3" out but a 14"long body, easier fit but louder due to smaller size.
www.magnaflow.com lists universal mdels, just scroll down the car make to the bottom and enter "other" and the same for model, "other" and you will find the screen. Ignore the high list prices and call Jegs with the model you would like. Mark

I dont know if I got a retarted muffler of the bunch or what but I have a 3"in 4"out oval and mine is loud as crap. Magnaflow that is, but I still love the sound.

With those specs you got yourself a Race Series muffler that is "designed with an agressive race car sound" according to their website. It's also 14"long body compared to the 18" I got. Glad you are enjoying it! Most of the cars here probably make whp in the 300 range which would not require much a wide open muffler to make that power. Adding a resonator or 4" diameter glass pack to the "B" pipe will also help quiet the system while still providing free flow. It's really a personal taste issue.

I went Edelbrock because it looks like a generic off-brand muffler. http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=Edelbrock+5525&hl=en&lr=&sa=N&tab=ff&oi=froogler

THIS Magnaflow is NOT the way to go if you're trying to avoid exhaust tickets and unwanted attention because of a shiney muffler. This is the best sounding muffler I have heard, and nobody else who hears it can say otherwise, hell even my mom can stand it. She THOUGHT it was loud at first, then i opened the cutout. She changed her mind real quick! :D Once i get my ride going again, im gonna post sound clips just to shut people up and show there are other choices (better suiting) than what EVERYBODY else has. This muffler is $100, cant beat it for what it is, i promise. If you dont like how it sounds, you can come to my house and DISCUSS it. This muffler would keep a rotary quiet if that means anything. My RX7 friend liked the idea of this and is strongly considering picking one up.

shoot for the megan.... but if you are scare of the cops get the magnaflow, which is nice but very pricey.

Get a Thermal muffler, I think it looks really nice.

Apex N-1 all the way. It is the best muffler out there hands down (w/ the exception of the Magnaflow TI, but that $650 just for the muffler). And when mated to a turbo it sounds even better!

I've been dying to ask this: what's with the explosion of Magnaflow on this site? Not hatin'... just wondering.

 I agree, yet there are people here that are critical of others who model their upgrades/installs after somebody else. Some of the same people who say dont listen to what somebody else says will be quick to jump on the Magnaflow wagen. Im also not hating on the Magnaflow, hell I never seen one installed on a car in person. LOL!

My friend has a 2.5 turbo-back iwith magnaflow muffler and boy does it sounds sweat. At idle it is quit but after 3000 rpm it just screams. just think you standing next to a jet when he passes you. thats how it sounds. and in side the car you can actually hear the conversation or just talk on the phone. So, magnaflow is not a loud muffler unless you start to push it. He has 3"in and out straight thru. Yea and he is running 20 psi on streets so he is scaring all the people when he is boosting.

Hope that helps
Mike

I went Magnaflow with a resonator under the driver in the "B" pipe for a quieter ride that still sounds very deep and powerful when I get on it. When cruising I want to be able to converse or listen to tunes. If you want the highest flowing muffler for cheap it's the Walker Dynomax Ultraflow part # wlk-17223 for aroud $69.95 from Summit racing. Mufflers and motor oils are personal choices that will get you as many yea's as nay's for the same product! My BIG Magnaflow is an oval 5"x8"x18"body and I believe I have a side pic but would have to email it. It has dual 3" outlets that serve as my tips.mark

My exhaust: 3" Downpipe, 3" Test Pipe No Cat, Custom 3' Cat-Back to MagnaFlow Race Series Mirror Pollished Oval Style Muffer 3"Inlet.

Sounds quite under 3K rpms, until I hit full boost :sneaky:

maganaflows sound nice, but if you want a cheaper option, you could go with a POWERTECH muffler. They sell em on dynamicautodesigns.com.Really deep sounding exhaust.I had one on my 95 gs,and even with the added compression of the NA motor,it still didn't have that fart sound even under WOT.

Yeah, nice muffler, for offroad use only, right? That is a cop/exhaust ticket/pull-u-over for a stupid reason looking muffler :notgood: Otherwise, i agree, its a beautiful muffler ;) If you're trying to avoid any of the above stated objectives, then a generic-looking muffler painted flat black will help avoid unwanted 'onlookers.' We all have been pulled over for stupid stuff and hit with mulitple tickets at once. But what got the PO-PO's attention in the first place, the (louder than stock) shiney muffler.... OMG
