Alright.. I've owned my 97 GST for almost 3 months now. (completely stock minus balance shaft) The car hasn't given me a single problem up until now.. The other night i was cruising the strip with a friend, and we come to a stop.. Car starts to struggle to keep an idle.. I turn the ac compressor on to see if it raises the idle, which it did for a short time, (and held idle) but then eventually fails to keep idle and begins to stall. So i head home, and adjust the biss.

As of now, I have a constant 800RPM idle, however, i feel that the car is strugglign to hold that idle, or it is just struggling period. The car vibrates a whole lot more than usual, and i can hear the stock muffler sputtering (where it used to be a constant sound). There are black spots on the back of my car which i am thinking is combustion or something from the exhaust.. (Also, I can definetly smell a gas / richness to the exhaust.) My gas mileage and horsepower has sucked lately, and it struggles at idle even though it can hold a constant idle. The vibration goes away as soon as i give it some gas..

I am hoping that perhaps it is just a bad tank of gas, but in the case that it isn't. Can i get some some pointers as to what i can check out and / or replace to try and get this problem solved. I was thinking spark plugs, fuel filter, and then....... (fill in the blank)

I don't think i need to replace the plug wires because they all conduct spark.

Thanks in advance and sorry for the long post.

I've been having the same problem with my car:mad:. So far I have changed the spark plugs, wires, fuel filter, air filter and BISS o ring. The car just kept on idling weird like you have described . I'm thinking that the cause of our problem might be a vacum leak. I'm planning on making a leak tester to see if I have a leak. Will post if I find anything wrong.

My cars been doing the exact same thing lately. At a stop the idle drops and the car starts vibrating like its going to stall. But if you give it a little bit of gas it immediatly smooths out. I hear the same sputtering from the exhaust too.

Well just like all you others have said I have been having the same problem!! Lately my car has been having a hard tome idling and the only thing that I have to add is that in the last week my car has actually been dying. I hear a clicking sound and then it dies. I have been looking into it and I have noticed that when the radiator fans try to turn on then it dies. I think that it is something grounding out or shorting out because I can hear the clicking noise from my fuse box underneath my hood. PLEASE HELP!!!!

wow.. spring time dsm failure..

badgsx. Try backing your biss screw out a bit to see if that helps with your idle.

llopez. take the fuse box off and look for some unsheathed wires or anything that has detiorated or rotted away.

Holy jeez, I came here ready to ask the same question. I haven't smelled any gas, heard any sputtering, or seen any black spots. I just get the idle struggle, and it occasionally dies.

For me, I had two ideas I could try. The first was to buy a reducer to fit on the intake pipe I have, because the coupler connecting to the turbo isn't a very tight fit. The second was to get a new BISS/o-ring. I'll have to try both of those to see if either works. Let's hope so.

Alternator going bad? Battery dying off? Sounds like it seems to be something electrical, because it happened while you were sitting still.

I have checked the back of my fuse box and I can't see anything that is out of the ordinary. Everything looks good to me. But about my alternator I am kind of wondering because when I roll my windows down my rpm's drop and the instrument lights dim. But the only question that I have about that is why is my battery not going dead? My battery is fine. It always has enough "kick" to start the car just fine. And if my alternator is going bad then wouldn't my battery go weak because then the car would be running off of the battery and not the alternator? Right? Wrong? Please help? This problem is getting really annoying?
