Stripped bolt hole.

The very first bolt hole on passenger side of exhaust manifold is stripped. Well not actually on the manifold but the bolt hole for it on engine. I took off exhaust mani to put in a new gasket and some copper spray on there and me and my dsm bud noticed it just kept turning when trying to tighten it. I didn't over torque it for sure. It is just stripped from previous owner. I do not like it just snug in there. Any advice on how i can fix this? Can i use a helicoil? I have no experience in dealing with this problem. Thanks.

You can either helicoil, timesert, or drill to a bigger size and use a larger stud. You can get the autozone brand inserts which are the same as a helicoil for much less than the helicoil kit. They are like 20 bucks for the kit.

Thank you very much. Getting that at autozone in the morning. Is there a certain size one i should get? Man those autozone people are getting tired of me. I came in this morning to pick up fuel filter. They said ah you again man haha.

If it isn't one of the outside ones than it will be a m8x1.25 . You will also need the correct size drill bit, i don't have the size off the top of my head, but it is listed on the outside of the package.

The drill size should be in metric 6.7mm or diameter standard (.3150").

That isn't correct, the drilled hole has to be larger than the size of the fastener so that the coil can be threaded in after tapping the hole. The correct size bit is a 21/64 or 8.3mm.

The Helicoil brand set actually tells you what drill bit to use. And some of them come with a drill bit even. I had to helicoil three of the stud holes on my old engine.

i have the same issue, i broke off two studs accidentally when taking them out, drilled both of them, and i tried to easy out them. only got one out, cause the other hole was drilled a little crooked. im guessing im screwed on that part of the engine?
makes me so mad that all that power loss is because of one stud...

well, this is my dd car, so it is currently together, but leaks bad. the bottom far right exhaust stud hole is crooked and steers to the right about 4*. i tried to torque the top far right stud and it just stripped, but it is straight and do-able for helicoil. i know the holes in the exahust manifold are bigger than the studs themselves, so it is easier to get manifold crooked.

So drill it for the bigger stud. The hole isnt bigger, you just have a later year manifold on an earlier year head. 93 up use a 10mm stud on the ends

oh. yea this exhaust manifold came off an evo 1g. but about the crooked one, how do i get a drill bit to take it straight?

Drill it for the appropriate sized tap. This time get it straight.

Once you drill off center you are in a bit of a tight spot, best thing is get a die grinder and a pointed double cut burr (Tree shape?) and work the drill hole straight. then try to dill again
