2G Strange rattle noise front passenger side

Hi everybody, so i own a 1999 eclipse gst auto transmission. I'm going to try my best to describe my issue.

So when accelerating somewhat slowly my car makes a strange noise which i would describe as a rattle (brr-der-der-der) for a split second. It doesn't always happen and I've tried recreating the noise for others but I'm the only one who's ever heard it. It's coming from what sounds like the passenger side wheel well but it could be more towards the engine compartment. It only occurs at around 40-50 mph and is accompanied by a slight drop in rpms from high 2ks to low 2ks. after it makes the rattle the rpms return to normal as if nothing happened. the only other issue ive noticed with the car is at slower speeds the rpms kinda bounce around if not acclerating like the car wants to shift to a different gear almost.

Any help or theories would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

is your tps set correctly? does it ever randomly downshift or upshit or is it just a jumpy gauge? ignition timing maybe the cas?
I don't think tps or cas. It drives fine and pulls like the day i bought it it just does some weird shifting stuff. It does do some weird downshifting at the speed where it would normally shift from 3 to od. only other symptom ive noticed is coming off the interstate when going 75ish and then coming to a stop it kinda does a ahrd shift into first.

Do you have a check engine light? Maybe a misfire?
no check engine light, i dont think a misfire, it pulls fine if you get on it. It actually will only rattle when you aren't getting on it. It's almost like the car wants to shift into a gear after overdrive but then realizes it cant and the rattle noise occurs then its back to normal.

From the info you gave us, I would check the TCC solenoid or it may be a bad converter. It sounds like the converter is trying to lock up, but either the solenoid is sticking or there's something wrong internally in the converter itself. I've also seen a weak pump have similar symptoms if it's not supplying the trans with adequate pressure. Hope it helps...

I had a rattling noise coming from the same place and I took it to a shop and they said that there was something loose. They tried to charge me $2500 to take it apart and check it out.

Sounds like tcc lockup to me as well when cruising 40-50 as you stated it wants to go into lockup but some gailt has prevented it so it comes and goes intermittently you can try and cruise it at those speeds slowly on inclined hills or roads in an attempt to duplicate more frequently. And I'd put a shutter eliminator or trans conditioner in it to see if it helps. Torque converters can make noise

One thing that will help you a lot is a logger, for my 1g I used mmcdTCU to log my transmission.
2gs will most likely have a similar program

Now If you do have a logger that's able to log the transmission than it's easy as pie to pull codes and watch the solenoids engage as well as output speed rpms ect... You can even test the solenoids with the car in the on position but not running.

Without a logger it will be more difficult but I'm sure it's possible to read trouble codes a different way

Now here's a therory before my kickdown band snapped I had a noticeable rattle that I could only hear every once in a while mostly on bridges (heard it 2 months prior to my band snapping

I remember like it was yesterday acually when my kickdown band snapped,
it free reved like mad but before that I had some very soft shifts and random gear up shifts/ down shifts.
it's possible yours is doing what mine did and if it does snap you'll be free revving until the cows come home

I suggest you remove the pan and take a peak . I'd also test the valve body while your at it (logger makes this easy) you can ohm the solenoids from the connectors on the transmission,
As we'll as the input and output speed sensors ,and what ever else your fsm tells you to test

Are you 100% certain it's a transmission noise? How's your fluid? Nice and red an not burnt?

Have you checked the easy stuff like loose heat shields , inspection plates ect.. ?

I posted a picture of what I saw when I dropped my pan and removed my valve body

And here's a link to my thread , even know there different generations it may help abit
good luck man!
