1G Starting problem.

So SOMETIMES when I go to start my car and turn the key the starter dosnt turn. So I have to turn the key on and off and bunch of times then the starter will turn. I've replaced the starter and it still does the same things. I've also checked all my grounded points. There good. Could it be something is the KEY ASSEMBLY?

Could be the key cylinder. Have you tried disconnecting the clutch switch? It’s the one closest to the firewall. It could be bad, or out of adjustment, or the rubber on the pedal is worn/broken.

Yes I disconnected the clutch switch at the pedal. Still does it. I was thinking the key cylinder also. Just seeing if anybody says anything different

Hook up a multimeter to the starter signal wire and ground, set to read dc voltage. If you’re not getting 12v when you turn the key to start, there’s a problem in that circuit.

I will give that a try. Thank you. Also Mabe you know the answer. The fuel filter seems pretty simple to change as it's right on the fire wall. As long as my fuel rail gauge says no pressure am I ok to unscrew it?

Yes you’ll be fine. It won’t spray out but you it will drip out a good amount from what’s in the filter when you remove the bottom line.

Ok. I'm so happy I got my car going. There was something wrong with the fiav. It kept leaking coolant into the throttle body. So I got a block off plate. And made sure I have no boost leaks. And it's all good. The one question I have is what does it do if you move your TPS sensor. Mine is at .535 at idle. But I've hear of people having them at .610 and lower.

My fiav was stuck open too .Do you have ecmlink? If so, it’s best to set at .63 volts. If you don’t, there’s a different way to set it and I can’t recall ATM but you can easily find it.

No I don't have ecmlink. Here's one more question I have. I had the engine rebuilt and the head rebuilt. I should probly check the head bolts and make sure they are still fully torqued.. sooo all I have to do it take the valve cover off correct? And start at the center and work my way out.

That’s correct. Some might argue about having to retorque them but it won’t hurt.

I think I may have a head gasket leak. I'm loosing a little coolant. But no smoke from the exhaust. And no Milky good under oil cap and the oil dosnt look like any is in it

Take a coolant pressure tester, pump the system to 13psi while you have the plugs removed and see if it’s leaking into the cylinders.

I have a cyclinder compression tester.

You can remove the schrader valve and put air to each cylinder with the coolant cap off and see if it bubbles. That’s another way you can test

Would this kit be ok. And then when I pump it up it should hold at 13psii right?

I have that kit and don’t like it. You have to keep the line still or else it leaks. Just not a good design imo

Removed the shrader valve from the cylinder compression tester?

It only had a couple hundred miles on the build. I was.hoping the head just needed a little tighting

Yes. .9 bar = 13.xx psi
And yes. Removing the shrader valve will allow air in the opposite direction

It won’t hurt to retorque the head studs. How do you know it’s losing coolant

When I open the coolant cap it's always low. And there isn't any leaks. But I'm not seeing a milky oil cap. Or coolant in my oil. Or white smoke. I'm hoping trying to retorque it will help. It has a couple hundred miles on the engine.

Have you smelled the exhaust and check around the heater core.

What should I be smelling at the the exhaust? Like a burning coolant smell?. It just smells rich to me.. and no I haven't checked the heater core. Is that behind the glove box? I know my heat works good.

It would smell sweet so I don’t think it’s getting in your combustion chamber. Heater core is to the left of the glove box but if it’s small leak you might not see it. Maybe you’d smell it when you turn the heat on when car is hot

How low is it when you open the cap?

Only a little bit. I'm just getting the car back on the road. I got insurance but now I have to wait till may 6th to get registration and plates because of the DMV is appointment only now cause of the virus. I do wanna say the heat dos smell sweet tho

As I remember tho it starts to over heat because the coolant gets low. But I think that was because my fiav was leaking into the throttle body. I fixed that problem by puting a block off plate and looping the coolant lines.

Loop the lines to the heater core and see if you still gets low. You have to pull the dash to get to the heater core. Eric Tande did a great YT video and his channel is Velocity Lab.
