I was just wondering if it is possible to put snowchains on a 2g gsx with 17 inch rims? I go snowboarding alot, i have never been in an awd car and i was wondering if just the car by itself with no chains would make it fine? The hill is a monster usually covered with snow.

I just made a Tahoe run a couple of nights ago, in snow. My old Yoko AVS aren't M+S rated, but they did just fine. I'd tried another run a couple of weeks ago in _heavy_ snow, it didn't have a chance. And I've done int many times in the 1G with M+S tires -not snow tires- and tried to get it to "do stuff"- it held on like a goat.
In CA, if the weather gets to where you have to chain-up 4WD or AWD, they close the road.
If you do need to chain that thing -and you can't use chains, just cables, IF you're lucky and careful- they go on the FRONT wheels.
And chained or not, drive slower. No, slower than that, even.

It should be okay, but just as a 'warning', be careful with snowchains. My friend put them on his 2G a while back, and the chains snapped while driving and scratched up his side fenders pretty badly. Just tryin' to help you out. I would rather go with studded tires, but its up to you.

Studs on all 4 tires + AWD = VERY VERY GOOD TRACTION :)

what is was wondering is if i would have to put them on all 4's? Because of the awd system would it mess things up if they were on just 2?

i went snowboarding in basically a blizzard in my fwd'er with worn tires. i almost lost it twice but we made it there and back.
cutting school................. $ a saturday detention
almost crashing the car... $ scared sh*tless
riding fresh powder in new jersey.... PRICELESS

I know from expierence do not use them unless absolutely have to and do not drive faster than 25 mph with them on and make sure they do not touych your wheels whatsoever!! they will screw em' up.
You can keep them with you just in case but do not use them unless told to by the D.O.T.

Where i go boarding, it is required to have chains. What are these cables that someon mentioned? Just studded cable or what?
