Im going to look at a 95 talon tsi awd tomorrow. I was told that if you get off the gas after accelerating too long the engine starts to choke?

It does have a fmic, no engine management. Possibly an A/F problem?

Passing on it is no longer an option, its sitting in my driveway! HaHa

How much you think a shop would charge for it?

My uncle is plant manager at a heat treating facility, they have some pretty experienced welders. Is there anything perticular about this job that i should have them look?

or if they stopped laughing and realized you were actually being serious it'd probably be a hefty chunch of change your laying out.

Wow that's really really bad. Fixable but they'll sure charge a hefty sum... Man a few more months and that mount will no longer be any good. More bumps and that shock tower is going to fall off. My buddy had really bad rust like that, worse actually and that car was no longer driveable.

Ill deffinitly let her sit in the driveway till its fixing time. There plenty of other stuff to work on! So i guess my question now is how much is a "good chunk of change"?
Are we talking $500? $1000? More?

Iv read around a little, and it seems like the welding job is more than meets the surface.. Literally... So a steel plate will have to be welded on top where all that crap metal is and WAS. But then, is there more you have to do on the underside?

Heres that problem. Strut tower rust is nothing new, but that is to the point where its becoming a structural issue. Not only that, but even if that is repaired, I cant imagine what the frame of that car looks like. Hardly ideal for a project. If you do fix it, I wouldnt go to far past that as far as modding goes.

Its pretty much moded to where i want it. Id like to add engine managment and a few other little things, but i dont really plan on beating or pushing the car too hard.

Clearly its not safe the way it is, so it needs to be fixed. At least thats the only option that seems logical to me...

They will have to cut out all the rust and most likely weld it to the other parts that's not rusted. The problem is that they will also have to do all the edges and curves which will be more. Also not to mention the part that holds the motor mounts.
I know it's hard, but patience would of save you a lot more money. Check shops around your area. Most likely they might not touch it being a reliability issue if something ever bad was to happen and the cause was the welds. That would come back and bite the shop really bad. But I hope you get it fix, the feeling of driving one is priceless. I couldn't wait to drive mine when I first got it.

Ill get underneath her tommorow and see how she looks! Also while im doin that im gonna change the oil. Any recommendations on filter/oil combo to run? Im sure theres a million opinions somewhere on the forum, but while iv got your time... :)

I appreciate all the help so far, deffinitly gonna need it!!!

I know little to nothing about welding, but if your expereinced at welding, this job can be accomplished? Or because of its severity, only an auto specialist should handle it?

And your right, probably could have saved money if i had looked around more, but the 2g AWD Manual market seems to be non existent!

I just use fram but people say other wise. Mitsu oem filters could be found on stm website and is pretty cheap. Fram oil filter been good to me so far. As far as oils go it depends. Everyone says mobile 1 syn but I tried it and my car didn't run to great, tried castro syn, same story, didn't run so great. Switched to valvoline oil and my car loves that shit.
Welding, the job is doable that for sure.
Yea 2g awd market is rare now and days depending where you are from.
Take baby steps and the car might treat you well, good luck.

Yeah, I mean if your going for a full on restoration it might worth it. If you justed wanted a cheap boosted car your better looking for a clean roller. I would estimate at least 2,000$ at a shop.

Alright, this may be a noob question but ill ask anyways. Any chance i could cut that section out of a differnt 2g awd dsm, and weld that whole peice in where i need it?

I use Mobil 1 fully synthetic. 10w30 in all but winter, then I use 5w30. Also, Mobil 1 filter. FYI, a fellow DSMer mentioned we can also use the 3000GT oil filters which are larger. I checked at AutoZone and sure enough they are the same attachment but the filter itself is larger. So I have one of those on my car now. They do deals everyso often where you get the huge container of oil and a filter for I think like $25! Fell free to try something else, but with the EVOs, the recommended is Mobil 1 fully syn and our cars are basically an EVO III with a different body.

And yeah, when I was looking for my 2G, I checked every day multiple times per day on Craigslist and other sites to find the perfect one for me. I wanted AWD, 97-99 body style, manual, and preferably 99, preferably black leather, preferably white-faced gauges, preferably unmodified or very little modified, and voila! I found my 99 Eclipse GSX with all black on black, stock, though previously not too well taken care of. No rust thankfully but I had my work cut out for me. You will too. Good luck!

That might be possible, but good luck with that. I haven't tried it, but I don't know if the junkyards will like you cutting into the vehicle and yanking a piece off. No harm in trying though.

You would likely have to buy the entire front clip from a junk yard, but if you have some good welders at your disposal, I dont see why it would be an issue. Your best bet there is likely going to be to cut out the entire strut tower area and replace the entire thing if your cutting it out of another 2g. Its def not going to be easy, and very unlikely to be a cheap fix. For the cost your going to spend to repair that, you could probably get a rolling chassis that you could swap your motor and trans into and get something that isnt riddled with rust.

So how long did you have to wait to find your ride? Its good to be a dsm owner!

I found the strut rust forum and it explains all I need I guess! This problem will be fixed soon.

Can someone tell me how to post a video???

The car sputters sometimes when your on the gas, i recorded a video of it, but idk how to get it on here!
