Here's the delima guys should I turbo my automatic 98 rs? I have everything set to turbo it, but I know there are some reliability issues once you turbo and it's my girl that mostly drives the car. I've kinda given it to her. I still wanna turbo but don't wanna have any major issues with the car in the winter LOL Plus I found a great deal on another 2g awd. So I was wondering what are the real problems that can arise from turboing the 420a? I'm just looking for about 200 whp out of the car and know I can do it if I go all motor and that would be reliable for a daily. Anyway hope you guys can lend some insight.

I don't think you could feasibly get 200whp out of an all-motor 2G N/T; this would require extremely heavy modifications including very aggressive cams and extremely high compression pistons among other things.

If you turbo the car, and keep the boost under about 8 psi, you could meet your goal, however. Furthermore, I do not foresee any major reliability issues if the car is kept well maintained. The 420As are relatively reliable motors to begin with; you'll only start to run into trouble if you pass 9-10psi on the stock internals.

ty. any problems forseen with the tranny?

Trannys are beefy. Hahn's testing showed they can withstand up to 500hp in stock form. The clutch on the other hand is a crap shoot. Some guys have had trouble with it slipping at lower boosts, but most guys are able to boost 8 psi without any problems(like me).

Even the autos? He said in his post that the car was an automatic.

I owned a 95 GS A/T, and the tranny sucked in stock form. I'd be kinda curious to see how it would handle that power.

Oh my mistake, your right I didn't see he said Auto. I am unaware at what power level the auto tranny's are safe up to.

meh...instead of goin through that kind of trouble for an auto tranny swap, I would go ahead and convert to mtx if it was really that big of a deal to you :thumb:

Me too, but just in case you want to stay auto......

I'd pick up the basic, HRC turbosystem with a sidemount and run 7-8lbs on it. Install the trans cooler and take care of the car and you should see many years of reliable service. If the little woman tends to beat on the car, you might not get as many years, but it should hold up just fine.

And, just to clarify, 200whp NA has yet to be done, so your chances of making that happen will require a major investment in the car not fitting of it's intended purpose.

I would personally steer clear of forced induction, unless you are willing to handle the expenses that entail.

With all due honesty, reliability has different meaning for different people. I blew my 97 7-bolt 4g63 for apparently no reason. 125xxx miles on the stock motor, no major upgrades, running stock boost, driven only 10,000 miles a year, babied like you would not beleive. I purchased a high compression SBR race motor with a stage III head cammed head, 6-bolt ofcourse. After 5000 miles, we're having some issues with the cam. I take care of my cars with every cent and moment of time I have. I have countless friends and family members who consistently have trouble every so often with their modified/upgraded turbo vehicles. That includes everything from blown Mustangs, to turboed Preludes. Forced induction is more fun than anything else, but be prepared when the going gets tough.

My daily drivers are all NTs, without a doubt. A 1993 3000GT SL, 150,000 miles, a 2000 civic w/ 135,000 miles, a 1998 Spyder GS, 145,000 miles, etc., all running strong, never ever a problem. Though different people have different experiences, I am sure, and would blast me for this line of thought, I have been in the game just long enough to realize that, if youre not ready for it, steer well away from forced induction. Boost will thrill you, and kills your wallet. Just my honest 2 cents based on my personal experiences.

There are plenty of reliably daily driven boosted 420a's...just don't be dumb, and keep up with your preventative maintenance :thumb:

If you do turbo get rid of the auto. When i put my Hahn system on all it felt like with the auto was a vtec feeling like in the b series motors. Im exadurating a lil but you get it.

My car calls for more TLC that it ever has, since it's been turbo'd. But it's never been too much for me to handle. Shpyder is right, you turbo your car, you add ALOT of parts to it, each one of them is a problem waiting to happen and in most cases it eventually will. Don't be afraid you will blow your motor though, the instance he described is freak and will rarely happen for "no reason". Boost it smart and it will be fine. Just like Xmasta said.

:thumb: Don't be intimidated...you can DO IT :rocks:

The funny thing about turboing your 420a its the little stuff that goes wrong. I turboed mine and it ran great for like 4 months. Then my vac line came unhooked from my wastegate and I spiked one time to like 13 psi(unintercooled) and boom! Now I am having a stupid ground problem and my wideband is screwy. If you dont mind doing little things to keep the car running great then go for it. You also have to pay attention to things. I know there is no way my wife would know what to look for as far as driving my car and not hurting it. Like if it started running lean she would probably just push the gas more. If your girl knows cars then you should be ok. Good luck

LOL....we won't talk about the little things ROFL

...maybe when my car is running again

 Thank you, come again :toobad:

I might finally make another thread sometime when I'm not lazy updating about my ride...but if you do a little searching you'll find my most recent threads about what has mostly happened :barf:
