Should I get a wideband?

Basically, I was going to install this old EGT Gauge that I have but I haven't been able to locate a piece of the probe. And the more and more research I do the more it seems like the EGT Gauge is kinda pointless, at least for me. So now I am interested in a wideband, because I think it will help significantly not only in Hi-Throttle but Lo-throttle as well.

But I don't plan on getting DSMlink or AEM or anything, I am just going to stick with my Pocketlogger. So, is it worth getting/installing a wideband O2 sensor and gauge without using a "laptop-based" tuning system?

How helpful is it to have the AFR "on the fly?"

You people do know that you can log a wideband with the pocket logger right??? Yes you should buy one. Then you should find the EGRT wire on your ECU. Attach the 5v wideband wire and loog you AFR on your pocket logger.

I just bought a wideband for my 96 TSI. It is a very useful tool. And If you dont have a datalogger, get a buddy and go for a drive with a pen and a pad. But I will definatly agree that if you do a lot of tuning, a logger is worth the investment.

Definitely a good thing to have. I have an SAFC and Keydiver chip, and the wbo2 is a welcome addition to the family LOL. I ran without one for a couple of years, and regret not buying one sooner. Takes all the guesswork out of WOT tuning, and can save your engine from an early death. I was tuning for no knock on e85 a couple months ago, and then borrowed a wbo2 to see where I was. 16.0:1...eeek! I would have melted something in short order if I had not checked that out.

And I read it on the gauge, though I may look into patching it into the ecu...thanks for the tip, selmerguy!

WTF a WB is one of the HIGHLY most important tools in making a car haul ass.

Sure you can wing it by playing tiddly winks w/ a nb sensor, or trying to tune off of egt's... but that's ridiculous... an exact instrument is necessary.

Well its not that an egt is completely useless, it all depends on your tuning methods. An egt is important a lot of times in measuring "whether your car is running safely or not". Im sure you know that running too rich obviously decreases performance and too lean a chance of detonation. It all depends on your resources.

Not really. On the safe AFR, your car can run 'hotter' or 'colder' depending on just timing advance differences. The only way an EGT is useful to you is if you have a solid tune already and then you can use that EGT temp as a reference. If you are running 11:1 with no knock and 18* peak timing and your EGT is say, 1550*F, then you know if you are running 1650*F something is wrong. Without that basis, the EGT is useless.

Can someone tell me exactly how the wideband is installed on a 1g?

Do you still use the narrowband?

Weld an o2 bung in your downpipe, plug in wbo2, wire in gauge (power/ground), connect cable from wbo2. Yes, you still use your front o2 narrowband for out of WOT driving.

Oh,... I get it now. Thanks for clearing that up. I wanna run out and get one now, but I'd kinda like to find a stock-appearing gauge face. :)

IMHO the innovate LC-1 is the best bang for your buck wideband on the market. It won the SUPER STREET wideband shootout and it is very userfriendly. It also allows you the flexibility of setting your voltage scale to whatever you want it to.

You can also get rid of your stock sensor and use the narrowband output wire for the stock ECU.

my buddy has a AEM UEGO in his procharged mustang and its a very nice unit. im deff. going to be picking one up in the near future:thumb:

How do 1g guys run the wire from the exhaust to gauge, drill through the floor?

There are rubber drain plugs in the floor incase of a flood or something. I took one out and cut a straight line to the center of it. I put my wire in that cut and then reinstalled the plug in the hole it came out of.
