Shifting into 2nd (or should I say 'grinding' into 2nd)

Hey,

I am all happy with my GSX, but there is only 1 turn off about this car!! And I really would like to know how to fix it...

When I am driving relaxed and slowly shifting to 2nd from 1st, there is no problem....

Its only when I want to accelerate hard that is grinds into 2nd. I have made sure I press the clutch all the and shifter correctly into 2nd, but when doing a pull it always grinds!?? What does this mean? And how could I correct the problem.

I have a B&M short Shifter at 50% throw.
I have also put the harder Rubber shifter bushings I bought from Extreme PSI (which I think helps).

If anyone knows how to fix this that will be awesome!

Thanks in VanceAd..

you are in need of a set of synchros. there are ways to bandaid the problem but either way your gonna have to replace the synchros sooner or later. try bleeding you clutch master/slave cyl's, and adjusting the clutch pedal this might help for a while.

^^^^ Hes got it, worn synchros. I needed a tranny rebuild to fix my problem with them. You also need to make sure your clutch is disengaging properly as that can cause them to wear prematurely (just went through another set).

I am pretty embarressed to say, I do not know what synchros are.. But I will do my research right now!!!

There are a lot of aftermarket rebuilders out there for your tranny that will have you shifting super smooth. Check out a few and see what is best for you. I just rebuilt with parts from Team Rip, www.teamrip.com and it fixed my 2nd gear grind.

OK, learning slow and steady.

So the best bet would be to buy a Double synchro 2nd gear kit? Is this enough?? And can any mitsu mechanic do this? Or do i need to go to a specialist in transmissions?

you may want to try some syncromesh as another bandaid. If its not too bad, then it will help.

OK now what is this? And how do I do it?

syncromesh is just a certain type of tranny fluid. Drain out your old fluid and put this stuff in. It is sold at local automotive stores

Synchromesh is great stuff. I used the pennzoil brand from autozond and it made huge difference. I highly suggest you try this. It won't be a permanent fix like mentioned above, but it does help ALOT. I have a 95 gst with 150,000 miles and after the synchromesh it felt like a lot newer tranny.

Still, I have a question my self. Approximately how much would it cost for a basic rebuild from say shep racing?

OK, I will look into which lubricants I could buy over here in Switzerland. Hope it hope works!

Do you guys know of a lubricant there called 'Super Kote'? It is for engines and for Trans.. ??

i have a question too since im having the same problem as this guy. i kno it costs around $800 for a rebuild, but will it cost as much if it's just for 2nd gear?

If your second gear is worn, chances are there are other worn parts. If your tranny is pulled, and they have it apart, might as well replace everything while their at it. Going cheap is just going to cost you more money, especially when something that would normally have been replaced craps out.

From experience and as I just had a TRE tranny put in , my 2nd gear and ONLY 2nd gear would grind as well , making me believe it was the synchro, what it actually was , is that the clutch master cylinder was low and the pressure to go from 1st to second wasn't there in the system so it would grind as the clutch never fully engaged. Turns out the master cylinder was leaking and I didn't know it......as soon as I filled it, WA LA! It didn't grind anymore. :thumb:

Don't you mean disengaged? If the clutch never fully engaged you wouldn't experience synchro grind, your clutch would just wear out like mad fast. I had a problem with disengagement, and it just wore out something in my tranny (gotta pull it again, and yes 2nd was grinding really bad).

I have read several post about this 2nd syncro problem and no one has ever answered how much will it cost? like if i take my car to a shop how much would it cost to get the syncros fixed?

I do not come from the dsm world, i have a camaro. i did however just rebuild my trans because it was grinding into 3rd when i would shift fast. There are blocker rings on each side of the synchro, on mien at least. these blocker rings have friction material on them depending on what synchro it is it might be a dual cone or triple cone not sure in these cars. In order for your synchros to work right your clutch has to disengauge all the way. If it does not these blocker rings will try to slow ## engine down and we both know they cant do that they are meant to slow the internals of the trans so u can move the shifter and slide the synchro onto the gear and engauge that gear. On alot of stock applications the blocker rings were made of a paper material it wears out and if u synthetic it wears out very quickly. Most after market replacments are carbon fiber which will hold up alot longer and is safe with synthetics i recomend synchromesh it's a good oil. So in the end your trans internals dont slow down quick enough for the synchro and gear to line up on a quick shift, wait a lil bit and let it slow down more and line up and it shifts fine. Hope this helps u understand a little bit better.
