this topic came up in another thread and i didn't want to hijack the thread so i decided to ask this.

How do you shift during a race?
do you go 1,2,3 quickly, downshift to 2 and then go from there?
do you downshift at all?

what way works easiest for you. explain.

Depends what speed you are cruising at. If you want to highway race usually drop down a gear and floor it then shift at 6500 rpm with the stock t-2slow. Drag race is simple. GST-Launch at like 3500-4000 rpm's and feather teh clutch out. Gsx-4500-5500 dont drop clutch let it out slowly and then all the way then floor it. Keep in mind this is for manual, if you try to drop down in an automatic, you can look back in your rear view mirror and see you tranny sitting in the road.

it is a manual n/t. drag and from a rolling start

hmm.. i dunno try messin around. Launch at a decent rpm so that you dont peg leg off the line. when rolling just drop a gear and floor it.. id say power might drop off around 6500 also.

My point in starting this thread is to hear alot of peoples ways in shifting and to listen to anyone who has a little trick of their own. If anyone has a certain way that works best for them. not just specifically answering my 2nd question but just tell what works for you.
sorry for any confusion.

From a stop, I feather the clutch out at about 3500rpms. Run first to about 6000rpms, speed shift while holding the gas in... usually lets a good squeal out when it catches second. Going to third shift hard again but without the gas.

^^^ If i hold the gas when i press the clutch won't it over rev?

I'd let of the gas unless you wanna kiss your tranny/clutch goodbye sooner than you would have to letting off the gas when you shift.

Stay in 2nd for a drag, I tried doing the 2nd to 3rd and then downshift, slows u down way too much while ur in 3rd

no it wont, remember, if you hold the clutch in and rev the engine, the engine will act like its in neutral.. its all about foot pressure control..
you have to bring the revs up to your desired rpm's and keep your foot steady there, this is with the clutch in..

and for highway racing, you always drop to a lower gear before you start, depends on the car though, different cars have different gear ratios.. when i had my 87 rx7, i used to play around with my friends s10 extreme and on the highway, we would do a roll from 40mph.. i would be in like 4th before the race but when we're about to go, i would downshift to second at like 5000-5500 rpm while coasting at 40mph...

i think you get the idea

all i do is rev it in neutral to get it near 5500rpm,once tha light goes i slam it into 1st till it hits bout 6500rpm and shift to 2nd and shift at that same point evry time till tha race is over. i dont know if this is that great of a teqnique or not but its cool feelin tha torque steer at tha launch and im 4-2 in my races doin it like that. on a sidenote, one of those losses was a week after i learned to drive stick so im not sure how this teqnique will be for you but it works great for me.:dsm:

at this rate, you wont win any races.. no offense.. reason being is that you said you rev the engine in neutral, then slam it into 1st and go, i dont think any human being is this fast and still win some races against a car with same specs..

your best chances...

be ready at the light
put it in first ( of course with the clutch in)
rev the engine to desired rpm ( 5000rpm etc, have your foot steady on it)
then ease out the clutch while adding more throttle, then hit it all the way when your left foot is off the clutch..

then just bring it to as high as you go, and try to slam those gears as fast as you can LOL
