Hey Everyone,

So for some reason I keep having the same retaining clip pop off on the engine side of the shift linkage cables, the first time it happened it caused the shift cable to tear the boot and the cable ended up getting frayed.

i replaces the shift cables and got another set of retainer clips from the junkyard thinking maybe the clip was bad.

Yesterday on the freeway I lost 2,4 and reverse gear and sure enough the clip popped off again. I got lucky that the clip was still laying on the transmission and I was able to pop it back in place with the tools I keep in my car.

any suggestions? I would hate to mess up these shift cables as they are a pain to change out!

thanks

Maybe you aren't getting them seated completely. Tap with a small hammer to make sure it goes all the way down.
Maybe put a ziptie around it until you can figure out why it keeps popping off.
Make sure it is all the way down and in the correct orientation.

Yeah I have seated it with a hammer like the other 3 and this is the only one that keeps coming off. Anyone have any pics of how it’s supposed to be seated so I can make sure I have the correction orientation?

I have a 98 TSI FWD, I can take a picture of its clips. Hang tite.

Yeah I knew that but just couldn't justify Mitsu using a different clip and I don't have any N/A cars sitting around to reference. Even the auto and manual cables attach in the similar fashion so I wanted him to see cables that are attached correctly.

Yup mine are put in that exact way, Its so strange, i can tell yours have gone nowhere cuz of the spiderwebs LOL. That DSM life dealing with 1 off random issues LOL.

Each time i have placed it back i have made sure to use a hammer to get it seated as far done as i can. Im just hoping the cables didn't get frayed again from last nights issue. I drove home about 50 miles so they got a good test and seemed to still be in place fine.

I might have to try that zip tie idea just to give a lil extra protection

The bushings on the bolts that hold the plate onto the transmission are worn. I'm not sure where to buy new ones, so my trick was to just put a washer between the bolt and bushing.

You're lucky I have my transmission out right now :).

SO: this is the plate I was talking about. It holds both of the shift cable retaining clips.

There's 2 bolts holding it on. Each one has a bushing between it and the plate. After a while, the bushings get compressed and the bolts lose their torque. You can't just tighten them up, because they bottom out. So, you can cheat it by just putting a washer on the bolt so it will compress the bushing and keep the plate torqued so it will stay firm and stop loosing your shift cable clips :hellyeah:. (Yours wont have this washer until you add it)

And... this is what your shifter cable will look like if you don't fix the problem soon!
