I suppose it's time I document the ongoing 8yr build of my 91 n/t auto. It's arguably the first AWD swap 1g. And it runs pretty hard. Current best is a 11.74@122, and I'm looking for 10's in the spring.

I bought it in January of 2003 off a car lot in Detroit, for $400. It had a broken timing belt, and a thrown rod. I immediately found a turbo laser in the junkyard, and robbed it of a turbo and 5 speed swap. I also used the original n/t bock head and what I could salvage out of a rusty turbo motor to piece together a short block. It was skanky as hell but at least I had a running turbo DSM.

Heres the old bi*** about 6mo and a turbo swap after I picked it up, this was my first week at college.

Summer of 05, I had a problem.

Over the next summer I fixed it and repainted it. Pretty?
5108139248_72f4cfa758.jpg

Also got it to the drag strip for my first ever pass. 11psi, and a 15.90@92mph.

Then in the winter of 07/08 I graduate college, and get a job at CAT making some $$$...Time to make it fast. After countless hours of debating between a RWD swap, AWD swap, or just buing a Quaife... I opt for a AWD swap, and buy this shitbox for $1000.

I get started on the AWD swap.

After this the car got my custom E85 tune, involving a walbro 255hp, 450's a n/t fpr, and nothing else. I went 13.22 like this.

Gotta upload a pic of it at the strip.

Remember that lil incident from above? Time to fix the core support.

Well my loans for grad school had a little extra on them and I bought some cool shit.\

Needs more HY35. With a nice Downpipe. LOL.

Time to update. Last year when I was playing I was running out of injector at about 25psi. I've always wanted to do staged injection, and build an intake....sooo I got to work.

Sweet down pipe I made for the turd this summer. Need to take it back off and move the flex joint into it.

True T/S T3 header. Yeah, the primary's arn't equal length. Blow me, it was an experiment, and it fits a WH1C with stock fans.

I also got tired of my WH1C setup, and bought a HY35.

Notice the waste gate flapper is pointing the wrong direction? I cut it off and welded it back on that way. I'm running an internal gate with a dual port actuator hung off a block-off plate on the manifold. I'll get a pic of that when I'm home for xmas. Also notice the dedicated turbo oil pressure test port?

And ,Yes I know the O2 housing looks like poo. That was a test piece that I made 2 years ago, and had been coaxed to work with 3 different turbo setups. I'm building a nicer one in the spring. Here is the start of it.
424106973.jpg

I'll also try and get a pic of my cat-back I made.

As the car sits, I have a couple things to take care of:
1. Fix the oil drain, it's kinda kinked and makes the turbo smoke till it's warm.
2. Get some 4" couplers and get a solid intake and filter back on it. It's got a 2g maf hooked to the HY with some 4" aluminum pipe and dryer vent for couplers....Ghetto.
I'm going to try and get that done to take the car to Coradova for hangover fest, and see what it traps at like 25psi. I hope it goes at least as fast as my WH1C did at 25psi..

Then in the spring, its full court thrash when I get home from school.
1. Dual 255hp's
2. Hopefully a new ETS 4" race core
3. New valve springs, and possibly some 280's
4. Cooth up the new turbo setup...Port match stuff better, ceramicoat the mani and th.
5. Put in a fresh clutch, and freshin up the trans.
6. Possibly freshin up the shortblock. We'll see what a leakdown shows.
7. Clean up some cosmetics
8. Put this bi*** in the10's

niceeeeee, never heard of anyone doing a awd swap on a 1st gen..everyone around my town says its not possible to do it

man you got stills, that's alot of work to do. I need to buy some time. you seem to have alot. keep us posted

Update ya know.

Custom Oil drain

Also, picked up a set of kiggly springs, and a HLA regulator

I also went to the dragstip on new years day. On 22psi, I spun my way to 91mph in the 1/8th. Just about on par with what my HX35 setup did, and its durable and quicker spooling.

In may of '12 I bought a damaged JMF FMIC for $100, and fixed Big jump up from my little china one. Made a little over 500 at 29psi on the HY35 breathing thru a 2g maf on the first tune up The little HY blew up just after this.

This build is going good. Hope to see you at one of the meets this year.

Nice! Looks like you're almost ready to do a VFAQ on this subject! ;-)

Do you have pics of what you had to do with the gas tank area? What tank did you end up running?

Is it possible to run the original FWD front suspension? I know the fwd had a member down the middle but is it possible to mod that one and reroute it to clear for the awd center diff.?

So Last year was full of breakage.....Killed a turbo, transmission and engine. The trans only had about 100 mid 11's passes on it when it stripped 3rd gear. I also blew up a compressor wheel in my HY35 from overspeeding it with a 2g maf on it. Finally at the end of the year I went to a MAFT and made some power and went 11.14@129. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VvTCG9bxP6M[/ame]

Then broke a Tcase. Got it fixed and I blew up the HY again trying to make more than 604. Put on a HE351 made 650 and then a wrist pin failed before I could make it to the track.

Over last winter I started buying parts. Bought coated JE pistons, Manley Turbo Tuffs, ARP Mains, AEM Tru Times, ect. Virgin N/t crank too! All new freeze plugs and stuff too.

Didn't have another turbo block to build, so I machined a n/t for squirters, then dropped it off at the machine shop on my spring break. First week of summer break I drove my dads wagon to the machine shop picked up my parts, and started building it. Had the deck machined for 0 deck height and maximum quench. I also made a new stainless UICP and sourced another HY35 for this year. Also did some chamber work to the head and installed EngineBLDR valves. Bought a new Helmet too!

Got the car broke in and started playing with it. Went to the track on a shootout night, for just some shakedown passes at 25psi. Ended up qualifying #3 in the import shoot out and ended up in the finals racing a Compound holset VR6 engine A4 on drag radials. I went 11.5@125 to his 10.97@125

https://www.facebook.com/video/embed?video_id=10151822260435420

Got it home to notice a clutch problem, all the facing blowing off my brand new ACT2600/4puck. I fought this clutch all summer.

Put in a XTD solid 6 puck disc, and ran that the rest of the summer.

Built a new fuel pickup and switched to twin 255ext's turned the boost up to about 35 psi, went to the track and did this.
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kFt8CpuQ1hM]'91 Talon Hy35 11.2@133 11.0@137 - YouTube[/ame]

So far I've determined that I'm spinning the tires hard in first, second, and third.

Went back to the track 8/30, and qualified #2 in the shootout with a new pb 11.07@133. #1 was a S366 RB26 powered 300ZX on slicks that was claimed to 10.2@140. I had to race him in round 1, and went 11.3@129 with waste-gate problems, he only put a car length on me. So I felt pretty good.

So next up is a set of QTP's and a evo3 rear diff.

Most recent pic of the car when I was leaving for school. Pulled that trailer 300mi south with the cruize driving it and the A/C blasting. Car got 16.5MPG on E85, and I didn't have a cell phone with me for the drive either (ballsy I know!!!!)

This is my kind of build! Keep up the good work man. im chasing 10s myself (on street tires I hope!). Coming from rwd, im still getting used to awd. If I could chop a couple tenths off my 60' I should trap 125-130 with my current setup. But like you, my 2g maf is starting to throw in the towel at 30psi from my s258. So we will see what happens. Cant wait to see more updates from this build!

Car went 10.85 @132 this weekend, what a way to close out the season. Dropped 3 tenths, and picked up 3 mph from last year. Plans for next year are some minor weight reduction, front suspension limiter straps, maybe a faceplated trans. I'm hoping to see some 10.50's with somework to get the front to hook better.

I'd also like to work on refining the boost control. Maybe with an arduino and a touch screen.

You may have had the first 10, but I'll be the first to a 10.5 LOL heh;p I'm picking up cory bowers slicks tomorrow hopefully and I'll go bak out hopefully before season ends. Good luck! I have 4 DG coilovers to install also hehhehehehe
